As it was a brand new day as the sun rose in the partly cloudy sky. Children were peacefully sleeping in their bunks until a couple of furs came in and one of them blew their trumpet to wake them up early in the day.
"Time to get up everyone! Breakfast will be ready in an hour. Go to the showers and get change!" The Vixen shouted as he woke up the kids in the room.
Every morning, The children get up at 7:30am and start their day of showering and get changed into new clothes before they head to breakfast in the canteen. Heather and Michelle were assigned trash duty during breakfast, where they had to clean up the trash, pick up empty disposable trays, and clean the tables.
"This sucks. I hate doing this specific job." Michelle quietly says as sweeps up some wrappers from under the table.
"I know. But it's just for today. We don't have to worry about it till next week." Heather says as she throws away some used trays.
"When are we going back to the dead cities in Texas?"
"Sometime tonight or dawn tomorrow . General Nancy is still waiting for the recon drones to head back to see if there are children that need to be rescued further south." Heather explains.
"I hope we are not too late if there are kids that need refuge and a second chance. Besides, Social Services are coming tomorrow to pick the children up and take them to the orphanages to be adopted in the future." Michelle added.
"That's good. They can have a family of their own. And won't have to do much babysitting too if they're only a few kids here." Heather says as she finishes cleaning a table.
"Well, I will miss some of them." Michelle says as she loses her smile.
"There will be more kids coming in to take care of them anyway. I'm heared Team Bravo came back with 15 more kids from Austin Texas. They just arrived back this morning." Heather added.
"Do you ever want a child of your own?" Michelle asked.
"I don't know. I love kids, but I don't think I'm ready to be a mother yet because of my contract to be here for a few more years and being a single mother won't be easy at all." Heather explains.
"I have no doubt that you will be a mother in the future." Michelle smiles as she gives her a light playful punch in the shoulder.
Heather chuckled a little as she and Michelle continued cleaning up the canteen until breakfast was over for the kids.Meanwhile, Scarlet was sleeping in since it was her day off from her duties in the base. Unfortunately, she was having a nightmare that she repeatedly gets sometimes in her sleep. Her nightmare was about the human nuclear war and seeing the violence, the explosions, children crying while laying on their dead parents. And when one more nuke explodes. It caused her to jolt severely and made her wake up while sweating.
"That same nightmare again..." Scarlet quietly says as she heads to her bathroom to wash her face.
Scarlet gets it together as she takes a look at the clock and it was only 9:35am. She got into some casual clothes and headed to the kitchen for some breakfast and saw Jordan watching some TV in the living room.
"Morning." She says before heading into the fridge.
"Morning Scarlet. Did you sleep well?" Jordan asked.
"Kinda. Had that nightmare again." Scarlet answers as she poured some cereal into her bowl.
"That Nuclear war one?"
"Yeah, The same one of seeing humans fighting and killing each other and children screaming for their lives as the whole nuke exploded. It's really emotionally terrifying like it was a vision." Scarlet explains as she sat down on the couch.
"That is terrible. Have you talked to your therapist about that?" Jordan asked.
"A couple of times, but this nightmare started to show more detail than the last time." Scarlet says as she looks down.
"Then, I recommend you go see him later today. You don't want to have another PTSD attack, do you?" Jordan suggested.
"Don't worry. I'll go see my therapist today. Just need to go do a few things first." Scarlet says as she finishes her cereal."
"Like go see that sick child today at the infirmary? You've been going there to see him very oftenly." Jordan says.
"It's just that I'm worried about Latamer having Ebola and not improving well on recovering since we brought him back. So yeah, I'm going to see him." Scarlet says as she cleans her bowl and puts it in the way in the dishwasher before leaving the dorm.
Jordan started to feel worried that it wouldn't go well for Scarlet later on, and headed to the children's wing to start her duties since she was assigned to watch the kids in the activity room.
Scarlet made her way to the medical wing to check on Latimer, the sick child she found earlier in the abandoned bank in the dead city. She headed in and noticed that the doctors walked out of his room after giving him strong antibiotics and noticed her.
"Morning doctor." Scarlet greeted.
"Morning Scarlet." The anthro Cat says with a smile.
"How's Latimer doing?" She asked.
"His condition is still not good and I decided to give him some antibiotics and it's helping him stay stable for now. I am starting to worry about him." The doctor explains.
Scarlet loses her smile and was really concerned of him even more that it kinda triggered her PTSD but brushed it off easily.
"I promise he will make it. I'll make sure of it." The Doctor said with confidence before heading to the next room.
Scarlet walked in the room and saw Latimer in a deep sleep while he was on life support. He wasn't able to breathe well without it.
He barely opens his eyes and smiles at seeing her again.
"Hey...." Latimer spoke while coughing a little.
"How are you feeling?" Scarlet asked as she ruffled his red hair.
"Still feel horrible. Coughing..." He explains as he starts coughing up snot."Here, I brought a bottle of orange juice from the vending machine. It will help fight the infection." Scarlet says as she opens it and gives it to him.
Latimer, took his mask off for a second and took some sips. After a couple minutes, Latimer puts his mask back on after finishing it. Scarlet and him had some time being together as she helped get him back to good health until it was time for her to go.
"Get some rest. I have a mission to go to today. Don't worry I'll be back." Scarlet says as she raises her sheets up
"Be careful...." Latimer says before he started to cough a storm.
"Don't worry about me." She says before she heads to the hangar to meet up with the others.
She, Heather, Michelle, Clara, Jordan, and even Hailey were ready to go on another rescue mission that is further south in Texas cities since General Nancy informed them that there are children in the dead city of Houston. But as they aboard the helicopter. They don't know that they're is a huge threat that will be awoken. A threat that will threaten the remaining humans. But a threat to the new society of the Fur.
