It's been a week since we've moved, and I have yet to get the boxes of stuff emptied out into my room. I've mostly been exploring out in our neighborhood. So far the only interesting thing I've found is an abandoned house right across from ours. The neighbors say it's haunted, but it doesn't matter to me anyway.
Failing to unpack my things is also due to the fact that I start school in TWO DAYS. This is outrageous. I just got here and then my parents decide to just stick me in a new school.
My last few summer days are being spent doing absolutely nothing because I will probably be juggling ten things at once when school starts. It's going to be an interesting year for me.
"Weyville High School," I said to myself, looking at the big sign at the front of the school. I was about to walk in when someone rammed right into my shoulder. She had dark brown hair, like mine, and was fairly short, unlike me.
"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry, I was focusing on something and I didn't see-"
"It's fine," I said, "Don't worry about it."
"Are you new here?" She asked.
I nodded and held my hand out to her, "I'm Cara, and you are?"
"Madilyn," she said, and shook my hand.By the time lunch came I already had two friends. I met this boy named Jack earlier today. Me, Madilyn, and Jack sat with each other at lunch. Getting to know each other was pretty easy. It turned out Jack was new at school, too. Madilyn seemed so happy to have friends. She said she never really had any here at this school. I'm glad I made some quickly.
When I pulled in the driveway I went out and got the mail. After shutting the mailbox, I couldn't help but glance over to that abandoned house across the road. I was kind of drawn to it. My mom had the decency to pass down her explorative nature to me. I'm always willing to try new things or dig deep in unknown places. This house was the perfect unknown place. For being haunted, it looked pretty innocent to me.
"Checking out the old house there?" Said a voice suddenly next to me.
I jumped back, nearly scared to death. "Oh my god you scared me."Standing in front of me was a boy with light brown hair and deep brown eyes. Did he live around here? He must've been running, his shirt is sweat stained and he was breathing heavily.
"Oh, oh uh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," he said.
"You're fine, I wasn't paying attention," I mumbled to him.
"You must be Cara."
I took a step back. "How do you know my name?" I questioned.
"I saw you at school. All the guys were talking about some hot new girl," he said.I rolled my eyes. "Hot new girl? Really?"
"Yup," he said.
I sighed. "I said that out loud didn't I?"
"Yup," he said again, "I'm Isaac, by the way."
"Well, nice to meet you Isaac," I said.
"Nice to meet you, too," he said, and started walking back down the street.
"Wait!" I called out for him. He turned around. "What do you know about that house?"In his eyes I could see something as he looked at the house. Some sort of sympathizing, I assumed.
"Whole family basically went missing. Predicted dead."
"What do you think?" I yelled as he started down the street again.
"There's hope for everything!" He yelled back.Isaac waved once more before turning and running again.
I walked up to the door and went back in the house. Just as I walked in Dad had dinner ready. The chef of the house was always Dad. He taught me to cook pretty well, but no one can do it just right like him.
"Smells good, Dad!" I said, dropping the mail on the counter. I ran up to my room and plopped down on my bed. Thoughts of unpacking my room came to my head. I sighed and got up, thinking I'd better start now, when I got an idea. I grabbed my phone off the bed and sent out a text.
Wanna come over? I need help unpacking. -Cara
A few minutes later a knock came at the door. Madilyn and Jack came to help me unpack. Madilyn and I started organizing my closet while Jack sets up my new desk and shelf.
"So, met anyone else?" Madilyn asked me.
"Yeah, some guy named Isaac came up to me while I was outside. Do you know him?"
"Kind of," Madylin thought for a moment. "Nice guy. I haven't really talked to him much."
"He just kind of..." I grasped for the right word, "popped up out of nowhere," I finished.
"Well I mean, he's kind of quiet," said Jack, "on the baseball team at least. I don't see him anywhere else."
"Huh," I breathed.
"Dinner's ready!" My dad yelled from downstairs. All three of us were sitting at the dinner table.
"We should hang out more often," Jack said.
"I agree," added Madilyn.A smirk came to my face as the idea popped in my head.
"Why don't we go check out that abandoned house across the street?" I asked
We all looked at each other for a minute.
"I'm in," Jack and Madilyn said in unison.
"Next weekend?" I asked.
"Sounds good!" Madilyn exclaimed.I finally get to go in that house. Maybe I'll see why I'm so drawn to it.
