"So...you guys are ghosts?" Isaac said for about the millionth time. Once we convinced Gianna it was okay to come out of hiding, Jess filled him in on everything. Now Isaac and I sat on the floor, leaning against the coffee table. I was painfully aware of us still holding hands so he could see the girls. Jess and Gianna sat opposite of us; Jess sat with her legs folded, and Gianna with hers tucked underneath her, as if she were trying to hide them.
"When did you, you know..." Isaac trailed off as if asking them when they died would offend them.
"Two years ago," Gianna's voice was a quiet mumble.
"Ah, she speaks!" he said in a joking manner, but that just made her bow her head down more.
A question rose to my mind, "Wait, if you've been dead for that long, how come you didn't track me down sooner? When I was still living in my old house?"
"I thought that was death," she said, "I thought I would remain a ghost forever, so I just watched over you. That is, until, Gianna got a hold of me, and Lady Griffith, the witch, told me everything. Let me tell you, Cara, moving here wasn't a coincidence."
"How so?" I asked.
"Well, I may or may not have overheard your parents talking about moving way before you even knew about it, so I sort of slipped the thought into their mind that there was a house for sale right across from this one, where Gi was," she said, trying to sound innocently sweet.
"How did you know the house was for sale?" asked Isaac. He was a bit suspicious.
"Gianna told me right after she died, the people across the street bolted," I noticed Jess has to speak for her a lot. Isaac just nodded in response. I asked Gianna a few more questions, none that were of extreme importance. After that we sat for a while, and Isaac seemed to be amazed by our hands that lay intertwined on the floor. As he was doing that, I looked over at Jess. She was looking at him, with a strange look on her face. It didn't take long for me to realize what she was doing.
"Jess!"
"What?" she asked, as if she were doing nothing wrong.
You can't just pry into people's brains!
"Actually, I can," she said with an evil grin on her face. I knew she would hear my thought.
Isaac seemed confused, but decided to leave the matter alone. Suddenly, he stood up, dragging me with him so he wouldn't lose sight of Jess and Gi.
"I know someone who can translate that book," he said. It was as if a light bulb went off inside his head. He looked like he just won the lottery.
"The guidance counselor," he said. Jess had a look of confusion on her face.
"Who?" she asked.
"Miss Haul, she's a guidance counselor uptown. She's, uh, bi..." Isaac searched for the correct word.
"Bilingual?" I told him.
He put a finger in the air, "Yes! Bilingual! I knew that," he said. I just rolled my eyes.
"Okay, we'll bring it to her soon," I told the girls. We have to get going soon, since it's getting dark sooner and the nights are getting colder.
"You guys should go, it's getting late," said Gianna.
"Yeah," I said, "We'll be back soon," I told them, gathering up the book and heading for the front door. Isaac let go of my hand and kept walking, but Jess pulled me back for a second.
"He's totally into you," she whispered with a smirk on her face.
"Why are you whispering? He can't hear you anymore," I said. She waved me off.
"Bye, Jess," I told her.
"We won't be going anywhere!" Jess called as we walked out. I turned and waved to her before we left.
"How do you know the guidance counselor? I didn't even know there was one in this town," I asked Isaac.
"I went to her after my dad died. I was having crazy nightmares and stuff," he said, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
"Oh," was all I managed to say as we reached my driveway.
"Thank you," he said, "For trusting me enough to show me your..." he grasped for a good word, "Interesting friends." I giggled.
"Hey, if you're ever up to finding some ghosts, just give me a call," I said, shooting him a smile.
He opened his car door and said, "I'd love to."
We said our goodbyes and I retreated back into the comfort of my own home. I put the red book back inside my backpack and went up to my room. Boxes were still stacked all around, since I'm dying to repaint the walls in this room, and I haven't actually gotten around to picking a color and actually buying the paint and supplies. I spotted the small box that I stuffed with all of my pictures. Photography was my passion, I took pictures of everything and everyone, no matter where I went with my family or friends. The box was strangely opened.
I never open it.
Approaching the box, I felt my stomach drop. All of my pictures were gone, except for one; Me, dressed as a pilot for Halloween, and Jess, a flawless princess. There was a big black slash through Jess's face.
I dropped the picture when I heard the front door click open downstairs.
"Cara! Come help with dinner!" My mom's voice echoed through the house.
"Coming!" I yelled, shaking away the thought of what I just found.
