The morning after Isagi joined Rin's team, the boys woke to find Jin's bed empty and neatly made. Though the sight worried Isagi, he was reassured offhandedly by Aryu that sometimes she liked to wake up early and practice by herself. It made sense, the blue eyed boy decided. Jin was always working twice as hard as the rest of them.
The boys had a quick breakfast in the cafeteria before heading to the locker room to change for their match against the five best strikers in the world, yet still there was no sign of Jin. Aryu was again quick to come up with an explanation to calm Isagi's nerves.
"She's probably already changed and waiting for us in the tunnel," Aryu said, flipping his long, sleek hair from his shoulder. "She never seems to understands the important statement of being fashionably late."
But when they arrived at the tunnel, Jin was nowhere to be found. At that point, Isagi lost his patience.
"Okay, that's it," Isagi said, turning to the taller boys around him with a scowl. "No one knows where she is. I'm going to find her."
Before he could step away, a voice sounded from above them. "There's no need for that, Mr. Isagi," Ego said, his face flashing onto the screen above the entrance to the pitch. "Unfortunately, Jin Saito is unable to make it to today's match, so I've taken it upon myself to select a substitute to replace her."
At that exact moment, a figure appeared at the end of the hallways behind the boys. They turned sharply at the sound of footsteps approaching, unaware of Jinpachi Ego grinning cruely above them.
"Isagi," Meguru Bachira called, flashing a cheeky grin that did well to disguise the painful clenching of his heart. "Let's go beat these suckers," he said before his features turned briefly stoic. "But after, we need to talk."

Later, Isagi would find a small, folded piece of paper tucked into the back corner of his locker. When he unfolded it, all he would find was a short, messily scrawled sentence that would latch onto his soul and stay with him for the following years of his life. When his dream tasted like dust on his tongue, when the monster within him keened for what they had lost, he remembered the words from that paper.
Isagi, it said in a handwriting he'd learned to know well, better keep up.
