Later that night Julie was laying in bed scrolling through her phone. It was around midnight. She got a text. It read.
Are you still awake? - Sam
Yes. - Julie
I can't sleep. - Sam
I hate when that happens to me. - Julie
What keeps you awake? - Sam
My thoughts about the future. What about you? -Julie
Nightmares. -Sam
About what? -Julie
I don't really want to talk about it. - Sam
Well if you ever do, I'm here for you. - Julie
Thanks. - Sam
They spent the next two hours texting. He told her he was born in Washington and moved to Atlanta when he was in middle school. They talked about their childhoods.
Can I sit with you at lunch Monday? - Julie
Sure. You know, people will talk. - Sam
I'm gonna go to sleep. - Julie
Ok. Goodnight. - Sam
Goodnight. - Julie
Monday morning Julie and Camille got to school at the same time. They were walking through the parking lot.
"Hi." Julie said.
"Hi." "Any progress with skaterfreak?"
"I got him to trust me." "We're eating lunch together today."
"I feel sorry for you."
Later that day at lunch Julie sat with Sam and Toby. Toby looked surprised. She looked at him.
"Hi, Toby right?" She asked.
"Yeah." Toby said.
"I'm sorry I kept you up all night last night." Sam said.
"That's ok." Toby again looked surprised.
"We were texting dude." Sam said looking at Toby.
"What are you doing tonight?"
"I have to work."
"When do you get off?"
"Ten, I'm closing."
At around four in the afternoon Toby walked into Sam's work.
"Hey man." Sam said from behind the counter.
"Hey." "Slow day huh?"
"Yeah."
"So, what's the deal with you and Witherspoon?"
"What do you mean?"
"What was up with her sitting with us at lunch today." "Why are you guys texting each other?" "This is the girl you said has the IQ of a cockroach."
"Julie's not so bad."
Toby rolled his eyes. "Oh my god."
"What?"
"You like her."
"No I don't."
"You do so."
"We're just hanging out."
At nine o' clock that night Julie walked into Sam's work holding a Tupperware bowl.
"Hi." He said from behind the counter.
"Hi." She said as she walked up to the counter. She put the container on the desk. "I brought dinner for you, chicken and potatoes."
"Thanks."
"Can I hang out here till the end of your shift?"
"Yeah."
"I'll give you a ride home."
"Ok."
They'd just pulled up outside of Sam's house.
"Thanks." He said.
"You're welcome."
"Let's go to the party."
"Ok." "We're gonna have fun." "We have to go shopping."
"What for?"
"Do you have anything to wear?"
"No." "We'll go Friday." He got his board and got out of the car. He bent down by the passenger side window. "Text me when you get home."
"I will."
The rest of the week Julie and Sam were hanging out at school and texting each other at night. That Friday Julie and Sam went to the mall. She was waiting for him to come out of the fitting room.
"Ready?" He asked.
"Yeah." He came out wearing a black sport coat, red buttoned dress shirt and black dress shoes.
"What do you think'?"
"You look great." "Do you like it?"
"Surprisingly, yes."
The next night Julie was at Sam's house to pick him up. She was waiting in her car. She was wearing a red dress. Sam got in the car.
"Hi." She said.
"Hi." "You look nice."
"Thanks."
"It won't be a problem that I don't drink will it?"
"No." "I don't drink either."
They just got to the party.
"I'm glad you guys could make it." Rachel said. "Make yourselves at home." She walked away.
Sam looked at Julie.
"Are you thirsty?" He asked.
"Yeah."
"Me to, I'll be right back." He walked away.
Camille walked up to Julie. "Skaterfreak cleans up nice."
"Yeah."
"Do you like him?"
"No."
"Bullshit. you're with him all the time."
"Oh please, he's just a bet." She walked away.
Julie found Sam by a snack table. He was holding two glasses of punch.
"Here." He said.
"Thanks." They drank their punch.
"Wanna dance?"
"Yeah."
After dancing for awhile they went back to the snack table to get something to eat.
"This isn't so bad." Sam said.
"Good."
"What the fuck are you doing here skaterfreak?" Ben said coming up to her.
"What's it to you?" Sam said.
"People that matter belong here, not losers like you."
"You are such a fucking asshole."
Ben picked up a bowl of white dip and threw it all over Sam's shirt and jacket. Everyone was watching them now. "Say that again." Sam was angry. He punched Ben in the mouth knocking him to the ground. Sam left. Julie went after him.
Julie and Sam were outside.
"Sam stop." She said.
He turned to face her. "This was a mistake." He said angrily. "I was stupid to think I could fit in with you and your people." He walked away.
