Thank you for all your kind and funny comments on the last chapter! As a thank you, this chapter will be extra long! A reader requested that I post at least three times a week, and I love the support and interest, but I will be staying with the Monday and Friday updates as I want to prevent any need for extended hiatus's to catch up on chapters or what not.

On another note, I have submitted the first book of this series Only Human: Monsters and Men into the 2023 Wattys! Nothing may come of it, but I thought it would be worth a try. Please wish me luck, and thanks for staying with my story this long. I'll keep my readers updated if I get any news. Thank you and enjoy the long chapter!

Back to Original POV

This was all Jimmy's fault! Well, maybe not all his fault. I guess no one could have predicted him running into an old friend. I snorted. More like enemy.

We were only a short way away from Destin's room when three werewolves intercepted us in the hall. I only noticed, because Jimmy finally took his eyes off his phone and stepped in front of me. This was the first time that he did anything remotely guard like, so it caught my attention.

"Jimmy? What cha' doin' here mate?" the brown haired and golden eyed werewolf said with a friendly smile and a slight wag in his tail.

"You know the drill, Zeke. Just making a living," Jimmy said with a friendly zeal. I'd imagine Jimmy's face would be smiling or smirking, but his fingers twitched and I could feel the hair on the back of my neck raise.

"Oh yeah? Well, don't I know the struggle. Even some of us alphas have to get our hands dirty to score some extra cash. Your current gig decent pay?" Sure enough I noticed the pendent around the werewolf's neck, but his friends who started to meander past us wore no necklaces. I could only assume they were betas. His betas.

"Decent enough." Jimmy glanced at the werewolves lazily walking past us and he stepped back closer to me. I found myself stepping closer to him as well. Even though these werewolves had their arms crossed behind their heads and their bodies slack, something was telling me to run. It could be the way their eyes never left us or how their noses twitched taking in our scents, but my heart was starting to pick up and my mind was becoming hyper-clear.

The alpha werewolf nodded and stuffed his hands in his jean pockets. He looked down and clicked his tongue against his teeth before looking back up at Jimmy. His friendly smile suddenly more ominous. "Decent enough. Decent enough to stroll into my territory after that shit you pulled in Meridion." His quiet voice was more terrifying than if he had been yelling.

The betas seamlessly turned to face us and now we were surrounded by three werewolves. I couldn't help but grip at Jimmy's jacket. This didn't seem to have anything to do with me, but the betas were eyeing me hungrily. Jimmy glanced back at me for a second, but quickly refocused on this Zeke.

"Come on, Zeke. You know that wasn't personal. The client told me not to tell you. The cheap bastard was afraid you'd demand more money. My hands were tied." Jimmy said in an awful attempt to diffuse the situation.

An animalistic growl came from Zeke as his smile faltered. "Tied my ass! A simple heads up before we entered the damn warehouse would have been fucking nice. There's only two vampires and a beta on guard? Try five vamps and an alpha with his two betas! That cheap client of yours wanted us dead and the job done. Or maybe you wanted us dead and the payout would have been all yours. Tell me, Jimbo. Which was it?" His sick smile returned and I could see his wolfish fangs peak through his lips.

"Hey! I have been many things, Zeke. But I've never betrayed a comrade in action. I was there with you until we got out of there. No one died and the job was done." Jimmy seethed. He was almost shaking from Zeke's accusation.
