chapter eight: cause and effect
"She deserves the moon and stars."
☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽After finding Waylon Forge dead in his boat, Charlie demanded that the twins carry pepper spray with them at all times. Ollie didn't know the man that well and only saw him when he came to eat at Carver Cafe but she knew that he was a good man. Charlie was crushed at the idea that he had spent his night laughing alongside his friends and daughter while his childhood friend could have been dying. Dr. Cullen hadn't been able to give the police a certain time of death but was able to determine that the man had been killed by an animal. The Chief of police respected the doctor in high regard but didn't entirely trust his opinion on the matter. Waylon Forge had been found at night which raised some flags in the Chief's book. If he was killed by an animal then why were there no animal tracks found in the surrounding forest?
It didn't help that Bella decided to ditch school and hang out in the forest the day after they found him.
Regardless of Bella's initial conclusion, Olivia didn't rat her twin sister out to their father. Ollie didn't even know that Bella had left school. When the twins came home the following afternoon, Charlie was furious. Bella's defense was that her sister did it numerous times while they lived in Arizona so in her mind it was a double standard. Her older sister on the other hand claimed that she shouldn't be brought into this and thus sided with her father. Charlie Swan was never a man with words so Bella quickly became frustrated and stormed off to her room. Ollie suggested that they let Bella cool off and try the discussion later.
After a few hours of Charlie trying to find the words, both Ollie and himself joined Bella in her room. Bella leaned against her headboard while their father joined her, sitting across from her. Olivia opted to sit in Bella's bay window, watching the trees rustle in the wind as she listened to their conversation.
"It was an animal, Charlie. It might be long gone by now and besides, I'm fine."
Charlie sighed. He wasn't supposed to talk about any ongoing investigation even if it was his daughters but if Bella wasn't going to understand his point of view, he had to. "Waylon was maimed, Bella. His arm was almost completely torn off, his skull bashed in and his insides," the man couldn't finish his sentence. Blinking away his tears he continued, "We poured over his land with a fine tooth comb and we never found any animal tracks."
Ollie could have sworn she had seen something move in the woods but disregarded it, turning her gaze to her family, "So wait, what does that mean?"
Bella sat up, straightening her back like a steel rod had been placed. "Oh my god," she whispered fearfully, "It could have been a person?"
"I don't want either of you in the woods until we find out what happened."
