chapter ten: the betrayals of sisterhood
"She was home!"
☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽Charlie Swan is a calm man. His mother raised him in a manner to always respect people. He treated everyone he interacted with the utmost respect. When he was upset with his daughters or in an argument with his friends, he would never raise his voice. When interviewing victims of the worst kind of crimes he made sure that they knew that they were safe and he would use a tone that could tame the the wildest animal.
It was two years ago, he was at the station filing the paperwork for a petty theft that had occurred that week. It was late at night but he stuck around, promising his deputy that he would finish said paperwork so the woman could go home to her family. It was going on midnight when the bell on the door dinged.
"Can I help-" the words got stuck in his throat when he saw who was standing in the lobby. He had expected it to be a fellow officer that was just coming off patrol but it was a girl. Her hair was drenched from the rain and her pink and purple floral dress clung to her skin. She had her arms wrapped around herself allowing the red handprint to be put on display. The girl brought her hand up, inches from her neck as she tried to speak. Silent tears streamed down her face and he took notice of the red handprint staining her neck.
Charlie hastily tore his heavy jacket off and wrapped it around her and the dam she built around herself broke. The girl let out loud sobs that broke the man's heart. She clutched onto his jacket like it was keeping her above the rough waves that were threatening to drown her.
He called her parents and once they arrived she asked if her mom could stay with her while she gave her statement. Charlie wasn't going to deny her any comfort.
As she recounted the events through tears, Charlie's stomach twisted. He felt his chest get heavier and his ears burn, he wanted to put her attacker through every ounce of pain she felt in that moment. He wanted the person who brought her this pain to suffer. But he kept his composure, he kept calm.
Charlie Swan is a calm man.
But every calm man has his breaking point. When Mr. Haggins informed Dr. and Mrs. Cullen and himself what Emmett and Alice were doing to Ollie, he saw red.

A few days had passed since the suspension of the two Cullen siblings and was now the weekend. The weekend had been calm so far, Charlie had one of his rare days off, Ollie was sitting at the kitchen table working on math homework and Bella was standing in the hall trying to gain the courage to tell her father her plans for the day. Bella had been hesitant about telling her father about her relationship with Edward Cullen since that situation had been brought to light. Bella knew that Ollie was supportive of their relationship despite his siblings' cruelty. "My resentment is towards Goliath and Cracked-out Tinkerbell, not Edward," Olivia had expressed. So. with a deep breath she walked to the kitchen and sat a beer next to Charlie, "Hey, got you another one."
