The first day was rough. Sayaka was in pain every time she moved her left foot. She twisted it by stepping into a deep hole that was covered with the fallen leaves of trees. Renji insisted on carrying her, but she disagreed. She didn't want to make Renji even more exhausted than he already was. Renji's shoulder was stinging in pain, the strap of the basket was digging into his wound, and he would be sure the bandage was covered in blood by now.
They eventually stopped at a bed-and-breakfast, feeling refreshed after taking a shower; washing off the dried, cracked blood that was painted on their hands, except it wasn't theirs. Sayaka had dirt all over her clothes and face while Renji was caked in dust and sot. The owner of the bed and breakfast kindly gave an offer of washing their clothes, they both agreed thanking the old lady. In return for their dirty clothes, she gave them sleep wear, which smelt like lavender flowers, Sayaka loved the smell and reminded her of her mother.
There were two tatami mats, perfect for the two siblings, since it would be awkward to sleep on one mat. Renji fell asleep first while Sayaka stayed up, staring at the ceiling, getting lost in her thoughts. She was still thinking about the deaths of her family, the gruesome scene carved into her mind. She knew they suffered a slow, painful death while she was fighting off a man-eating demon in a crowded town with her older brother.
If only it was her in the house and the rest of her family was out and in town, she would give it all just for the roles to switch. She knew there was no way for the clock to rewind. It was fate. Hell, if someone gave her the choice to save her family but not herself, she would pick that in a heartbeat. They all loved each other and were happy, and she wanted that, even if she was never in the picture.
Flipping over to her side, she closed her eyes, hoping to at least get a few hours of rest before they continued their walk. Sayaka wasn't able to sleep the night her parents and siblings died; it haunted her. Neither of the two siblings could. They were afraid the demon would come back once more to finish its meal.
Finally, it was dawn, Renji packed the belongings, making sure to fix his tatami mat before he left. Shaking Sayaka awake from her slumber, he wishes they could both sleep in, but they needed to head out as soon as possible.
"Hey, it's time to wake up. We have to leave." He muttered, shaking her lightly.
Sayaka grumbled, flipping around, trying to get his hands off of her. After a minute of Renji shaking her, she finally sat up, stretching her legs and feet feeling refreshed from the deep slumber she was once in.
The innkeeper set their clothes in neat piles, placing a note that thanked them for staying and hoping their journey goes well, a smiley face and a heart was at the bottom of the letter making Sayaka smile, it warmed her heart.
After Renji had pushed the innkeeper to keep Renji's money, the two finally had set off again, passing houses here and there. It was mainly field for miles. The sun was shining. Fortunately, it was not as hot as the day before, but Renji packed extra water in case it was hotter than yesterday.
The two would have conversations, somewhere memories of family and friends or funny moments that made both siblings double over. It was a good way to keep their mind off the slaughter that took place at their house.
Soon enough, they day finally ended, and the sun began to drop slowly in the sky while the moon made its way into the dim sky. Reflecting off of ponds, the two siblings passed. They were close to their new home, their father's old mentor.
