Nico

On Friday when I got home from Will's house, my father was upset, to say the least.

"Where were you?!" He demands.

"J-just at a friend's house," I stammer.

"How come you took Hazel?!"

"She also had a friend there."

"Why didn't you tell me?!"

"I-I forgot."

My father groaned in frustration. "You forgot?!"

He balled his fist up and punched me. It stung, but I tried my hardest to ignore it.

When my father pulled his hand away, he looked at his fist in shock. He started crying.

"I- I am so sorry Nico," he says.

He pulls me into a hug, and I don't push away. In the back of my head I think, his hugs aren't as good as Will's.

My dad kept apologizing to me, and all I could think about was how is Will going to react when he saw it. He could get anything out of me if he tried. He could call the police.

My dad stopped apologizing to me because he is tired. I decide to go to bed also.

On Monday, I try to avoid Will. I know, he did nothing wrong, but I can't imagine what would happen. Everything could go wrong.

Will sees me, when it's time for lunch. I was leaning against the wall.

"Hey, Neeks!" He calls out. I love how he calls me Neeks, even though I'm annoyed when Hazel says it.

"Oh, hey Will," I say.

"Did you get home alright when you left my house?" He asks.

"Yeah."

Will looks at me for a second, and I know he sees my black eye.

"Neeks, what's that?" He asks, pointing to my eye.

I look at the ground. "It's nothing," I say.

"Neeks, I am training to become a doctor. I can tell that this is a black eye. What happened?"

"I said it was nothing," I snapped. "Now go away."

Will looks hurt, but for a minute, I don't care. All I could think about is how my father is going to go to jail. Hazel and I would have to go into the foster system, and her could be separated.

"Neeks, it obviously isn't nothing. And I'm not going anywhere. Tell me who did it-"

"Will! Stop! Please, just stop. It's nothing. He's-" I take a deep breath, to try and not say father. "He's getting better. He stopped himself from doing worse."

"Who?" Will demands

Will thinks for a moment.

"Neeks, did your- did your F-"

Great. He knows.

"Yes! He did. My Father did this to me. He's okay now. His anger just slips sometimes. He went to the rehab center, and he's good now. Are you happy?" I yelled angrily.

Will pulled me into a hug. Why does everyone keep hugging me? Don't they know I don't like being touched?

But, I don't pull away. It feels good. After a minute, though, I push away. I can't stand being in the cafeteria anymore. There are too many people, and not enough room. It's too loud, and I need to get out.

"I'm going to go," I say.

"Where?" Will asks.

"Anywhere but here."
