Another step towards normal

The next day

It was Monday now. The day soccer sign ups started and I was so excited to see my friends after my long weekend. It's kinda weird saying that because usually an average teenager would say they couldn't wait for the weekend. But the end of the week is what I dread. That's because every weekend I go to the hospital for the doctors to check my stats and health and stuff like that. I hate it because it reminds me of how different I am from everybodyy else, and it's not fair because all I've ever wanted was to fit in.

My thoughts were interrupted by a squeezing Cassidy in my ears. "What's the big deal?" I asked, pestered by her high pitched gleefulness.

"Soccer sign ups!!!!" She yelled at my face. At first I was mad at her loudness but then I realized that she had a right to be loud.

"OH MY GOODNESS IT'S SO EXCITING!!!!!" I screeched back at her.

"Come on come on come on!! We have to be the first signer uppers!" She begged me, her southern twang revealing itself. Everybody knew that you had better chances of being on the team if you were one of the first ones to sign up. We were now walking into the school so I quickly shoved the people around me an raced to my locker.

"Hey! You dropped this," I heard someone say to me. Crap this guy was gonna make me be the last one to sign up! I turned around to see who it was and instantly regretted my last thought. There in front of me was the most gorgeous guy ever to walk the planet. His emerald eyes were looking right at me; bronze hair falling just above his eyebrows in a disheveled style that coulda me you faint. He was probably a few inches taller than me. Which wasn't saying much since everyone else I knew was taller than me. He started to smile at me, his pearly white teeth breaking me out of my daze.

"Hi. I'm Jacob," he said shyly. God his voice was handsome. Don't ask me how a voice is capable of being handsome but it was.

"H-hhello..," I stuttered out. Oh how embarrassing! "I'm Noelle." Whew! I got out a sentence!! As I was doing my mental happy dance I realized there was a point to him talking to me. Then I looked at his hand and it was holding my phone, it's purple case complimenting his skin completion.

"You dropped your phone back there and I figured you might need it," he smiled again. Why was he smiling! Did he know it was intoxicating?

Jealous of his perfect body structure and flawless face, I snatched my phone back.

"Thanks," I said without making eye contact. Then I looked up to see his hurt face. Oh damn it! Ever since Carson I've blocked out every hot guy in sight, afraid that they would hurt me like Carson had.

"COME ON!!!" Cassidy called to me from her locker nearby. "At this rate we'll be lucky to get on 2nd string!"

She urged. What an impatient soul.

Well on this next part I wish I could tell you that I asked Jacob for his number. I wish I could tell you that we exchanged numbers, said our goodbyes, and made it to sign ups. But that's not the case! This is what really happened..

I turned to Cassidy and seen her looking at me like she could strangle me if I didn't hurry my butt. I turned to Jacob and started to blush because sometimes Cassidy was embarrassing. Without another word to him, I speed walked to my locker again. I hope I didn't come off as a bitch to Jacob. He seemed really nice and kinda shy. Don't get me wrong I was shy too, probably way more shy than him, but it was cute. He probably thinks I'm a total jerk and he regrets returning my phone. Ugh! I don't know why I can't just act like myself around strangely attractive boys but I can't.

Cassidy gathered london, Ava, and Brooke, and they were waiting for me as I was putting in my combination for my locker.

"Was that yooouuuu I seen talking to Jjjaaaacccoobb???" Ava asked me.

"Yea why?" I replied. I shoved my bag in my locker, along with my purse and phone.

"Oh no reason..just that you TOTALLY have a crush on him!" She burst out like it wasn't a big deal.

"What?!" I whispered at her, "I do not! He just returned my phone I dropped!"

We all walked down to where the sign up paper was (which was in the lunchroom). "You can deny it all you want sista! But you like Jacob and there's nothing more to it!" She kept babbling on, matter-of -fact like.

As we got to the doors of the cafeteria when we saw Melony, Macy, and Sara walking out.

Melony saw me and immediately started laughing. "What are you doing walking to sports sign ups!?" She turned her nose up at me like I was a piece if old garbage.

London stepped up to Melony and looked her right in the eye. "We're all going to enroll for the soccer team! Got a problem?"

Woah. Go London!

"Uh yea I have a problem! If you think for one minute that the school is gonna let baldy represent OUR school then you got your thinking cap screwed on a little too tight darling," Melony replied with much contempt.

Ouch. That hurt. It was one thing to get disgusted looks from strangers but to be put down by a former friend was just too far.

"Look you guys, I don't want to start something that will end badly. All I want to do is have a normal life," I turned to Macy, Melony, and Sara, "And I feel that trying out for soccer will help with that."

Everyone was quiet then. We all stared at eachother without conversing at all. But then a mass of people walked out of the lunchroom and the bell rang for classes to start. No!!! We missed the sign ups! Now I was mad.

"Did you purposefully stop us?!" I screamed at Melony.

All she did was smirked at me like she won this imaginary battle of ours.

"Alright ladies! Class has started and if your not in your home rooms in two minutes it's detention for all of you!" I heard the coach say. She was walking out of the cafeteria as well with the papers in her hands. I can't believe I missed the only time I could have got into a sport.

"Come on Noelle. It's too late now," Cassidy grabbed my arm and led me to our first class. London and Ava had different home rooms than us sotgey split up an walked away. I was walking toward the classroom with years in my eyes. Then I turned around to see Macy still standing there, waving her manicured hand at me in a gesture that would normally be taken as a goodbye, but I knew better.
