Partway through Loki's assignment to retrieve the Tesseract from Midgard, he gets a message from the Black Order to withdraw for reassignment. The Reality Stone, the Æther had reappeared, and Thanos wanted to divert all forces towards this, as it would be much harder to obtain. The tesseract would be easy enough, it could wait. But what does this mean for all the Avengers who were present for this message to Loki?

(for this fic, Thor met and teamed up with the Avengers before this, rather than during the plane ride after).

Characters: Loki, Thanos, the Avengers (Thor, Tony Stark, Captain America, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton)

"In the end, you will always kneel," Loki's voice was soft and silky with cruel satisfaction as he finished his address to the people of Stuttgart. The kneeling people of Stuttgart. And by the Norns did that feel nice. He deserved this.

The powerful silence lasted only a moment, however, before an older man in the crowd stood up. His aged face held defiance in its wrinkles, as his warbled voice spoke in offence. "Not to men like you."

The man had spirit, Loki would give him that. He smiled. "There are no men like me."

"There are always men like you." The man replied, holding his chin up bravely. It was honestly a pity that this man thought his bravery would do anything. Was Loki's show of power not grand enough?

"Look to your elder, people." Loki raised the scepter, willing its power to accumulate. "Let him be an example,"

Loki fired the scepter– but no sooner had the blue energy left the weapon, a shield of red, white, and blue intervened before it could reach the elderly man. The blast ricocheted off the shield and was sent straight back towards Loki, knocking him back. He looked up furiously as his new opponent's voice spoke.

"You know, the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing." A man dressed in a similar star-adorned fashion as his shield strutted towards Loki as the god stood up. Captain America. Steve Rogers. Barton had told Loki plenty.

"This soldier; a man out of time." Loki remarked with a smirk. Oh, this could be fun. A bit silly for his taste, but fun nonetheless.

"I'm not the one who's out of time." He was serious, for sure, but there was a bit of cockiness behind his voice. Did he really think this was going to be easy?

A ship came into view behind the Captain, and a turret revealed itself. A new voice rang out over the ship's speaker system. "Loki, drop the weapon and stand down."

Loki fired the Scepter at the ship, Captain America threw his shield at Loki, and the blue blast missed the dodging ship as the shield hit him once more (although he was prepared this time, so it didn't have the same effect.

And from there, all chaos broke loose.

People shouted and clamoured to disperse, and the Captain caught his shield and threw a punch at loki. They sparred with shield and scepter for a few hits before Loki sent him flying back to the ground, which was quickly recovered with a roll to the feet and a toss of the shield. Loki parried the shield with his scepter, and when the Captain had recovered the distance, Loki swung at him. They went on like this for a few more moves, Loki fighting adeptly with the Scepter and the Captain dodging, until finally a blow hit the latter.
