The next day Loki was behind the library desk reading. Nicole walked up to the desk and rapped on it with her knuckles.

"Hey, Shakespeare, you want lunch?" she asked.

Loki looked up from his book, "Why not, he placed the book down."

Nicole smiled, "Good!" she lifted a fast-food carryout bag into sight and placed it on the desk, "Cause I already bought it!"

Loki chuckled and rolled his eyes. He moved his head, gesturing for her to come around to the other side of the desk. Nicole walked around the desk and sat opposite Loki. She grabbed the bag of food and opened it. She portioned out the food then began to eat. As they ate, the two chatted. After a few minutes, Nicole received a text. She picked up her phone and looked at it. Loki watched the expression in her eyes change from smiling and laughing to disappointed and almost numb.

"What is it?" Loki asked, concerned.

Nicole sniffed and shook her head as she put her phone back in her pocket, "It's nothing."

Loki knew she was lying, but he decided not to push her.

After work Loki asked Nicole if she wanted to take a walk. She hesitated at first but then agreed. Loki led Nicole to one of his favorite spots. They came to a tall hill so Loki offered his hand, which Nicole took gratefully. Loki helped her up the last bit of the hill. He liked the feel of her hand in his. It just felt right, but he could never tell her that.

"Here we are," he said with a small smile, putting his hands out to his sides, "Isn't it breathtaking?"

"Yes, it is," Nicole said blandly.

"What's wrong, Ace?" Loki asked her, "You don't seem yourself."

Nicole sniffled, "Brodie broke up with me today, that's what the text was."

"What?" Loki was surprised, but not disappointed, "Why?"

"He said that I never have enough time for him. Which I guess he was right. He also said that he didn't think that he and I were really compatible. To be honest I think I was trying too hard anyway."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I was always bored with our conversations, if we ever had them. We were constantly fighting about nothing. Besides, it was wrong of me to keep it going even after I started to..." Nicole shook her head, "The point is it's over, which is probably for the best."

Loki nodded and let the matter drop. He plopped himself gracefully down in the grass and patted the spot on the ground next to him. Nicole rolled her eyes with a smile and sat down next to him. Then the two lay back in the soft grass.

As the sun went down the aurora borealis danced in the sky. Loki looked over at Nicole and saw the look of awe on her face as she watched the northern lights.

"You know," she started to say, "I've lived here for almost two years and I've never actually watched the aurora borealis."

"Really?" Loki asked.

Nicole nodded, "I'm glad of that though, because now the first time I watch it is with you."

Loki looked at Nicole in surprise then smiled.

"It's so beautiful," she said, her eyes full of wonder.

Loki did not look up at the sky, but instead kept his green eyes on Nicoles blue ones, "Yes, the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my 1,060 years of living."

Nicole laughed and snorted, "Man you're old!!"

Loki chuckled, "I suppose I am," he then turned his head back towards the sky. After a few minutes he shut his eyes and breathed in the smell of the grass allowing himself to leave reality even for a just moment. He was brought back by the feeling of something in his hand. It was Nicoles own hand. His eyes shot open and he glanced down at their hands which she had intertwined. Lokis mouth twitched into a small smile. He shut his eyes again, only this time he did not have to leave reality for his smile to continue.
