A ring sounded throughout the room, waking the lone person on the bed. She groggily sat up, grabbing her phone from the nightstand. A name was displayed on the screen but she didn't bother to check. Only one person could be calling her, and at such an ungodly hour as well. She slid the green answer button off the screen.
"You know it's my vacation, give me a break old man," Minji said, her voice husky with sleep.
"That's no way to talk to your boss." A voice from the other side of the line answered
"Yes ajeossi" Minji snickered.
The man sighed, "That's not any better."
"I guess you gotta blame whoever raised me, then."
Minji could almost see the man roll his eyes at her comment. "Yes, yes, I wonder who that could possibly be," he said.
A soft chuckle escaped from her lips as she ran her hand through her messy hair. "What could you possibly want, calling me at-" she squinted at her screen, "4 am in the morning? You must have insomnia to be up at this hour." She heard shuffling from the other side. Was her boss at his office right now? Her eyes widened, "I swear, it wasn't me that shot the hole into your desk- I mean whaaat? I didn't do anything. It was all Yeonjun."
"You shot a ho- you know what? Never mind. There's a new assignment that is now of top priority." A short pause followed "I know it's your vacation, but this one is very important. You'll be the personal guard. Plus, client's around your age. The last time you've been social was probably in your past life where you must have done something horrendous to make you so lonely in this one."
Ouch. That one burned. She bit her bottom lip, "What's in it for me? Other than the negative percent chance that I'd make a new friend."
"I'll give you another month of vacation and quadruple your pay while you're at it. Chance there will be contact. A suspected assassination attempt may happen, and we need our top people on it."
"I'll... consider it," Minji whispered through parched lips.
Her boss sighed "Come on, Minji. You're the best we have, and it's you I trust the most. Plus, I'll get you the bike you've been nagging me to get all year if you take up the job?"
Silence was instilled the chirp of cicadas being the only audible source of sound. It was Minji's ideal getaway. Alone with her thoughts, peaceful quiet reigning supreme. A fragile balance that was easily broken. Her voice cut through the air. "I'll do it. On the condition I get to choose my crew."
"Deal. I'll send you the details. Work starts this Saturday at 9 am. Bring everything you've got. The contract puts you up for a month straight or until the client is out of danger"
"Yes sir," Minji replied to her boss, the sleepiness shaken off.
Minji was about to hang up, till a quiet "sleep well" came through the phone.
"Well now that you've called, all I want to do is to drive to your house and demand to know why you would call me at freaking 4 in the morning"
A laugh sounded from the other end. "Good morning then. Would you like Coffee or tea to go with your daily skyrocketing caffeine consumption ma'am?"
"Go unalive yourself in a ditch you old man."
She heard another short laugh from the other end before hanging up and slumping back down onto her pillows. "I have just agreed to a slave contract for real... Now to decide who to suffer with me."
Welcome to my first story! I'm excited about writing it, albeit I am inexperienced. Hope you enjoy the series!
