"Aiden, hurry up and toss down the ladder before the biters notice us! And by "us", I mean me!" I hissed up at the dark brown-haired male who, currently, is perched up on the rusted green barricade blocking the tunnel we need to pass through.
After our mini heart-to-heart moment, we quickly made it to the only other known passageway to the Central Loop since the one located in the PK's base was currently too dangerous to go through. Even if it is the quickest route, the lack of power running through there, and considering that it was a few miles of dark cramped tunnel that I'm sure was filled with infected by now, this was our only option. Sophie told Aiden that this tunnel would lead us to the abandoned car factory, and from there, we would have to essentially find our own way into the city as this was probably the only other way in that wasn't doused in GRE chemicals. Upon reaching our destination, and realizing that there wasn't any power to open the large doors of the barricade, Aiden volunteered to find a way in by using the rocky terrain to get close enough to the barrier to hop on top and find a way to get me up there. Obviously, I don't have the skills to follow along with him, so I stayed on the ground and waited for him below the dropping spot of a metal retracting ladder. But yet, instead of unraveling the ladder as soon as he reaches the ledge, he takes a moment to stare out into the distance as if searching for something in particular.
"Aiden I swear-"
A loud banging noise echoes throughout the dusk atmosphere as the chipped metal ladder drops down and cuts me off mid-sentence. "Alright, alright, I hear you." Aiden's voice is mostly amusement, though I can detect a hint of distraction. I wonder what he was looking for...
I quickly climb up the cool steps and in no time, I am heaving my body onto the dark green platform of what I assume is an observation ledge. Aiden had now turned from watching over the sector of Old Villedor to the somewhat pitch-black tunnel. Mimicking him, I too squint my eyes to scan over the ground below us to spot any signs of movement. There was a bit of vegetation growing from the cracked road that only reminded me how much nature had begun to reclaim its territory ever since mankind was no longer as active at keeping it at bay. Old rusted broken-down cars litter the interior of the tunnel, some empty while others still had their passengers skeletal remains either still in their seats or on the ground outside of them. But the most prominent thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the huge green military container a few yards into the tunnel that was nestled up against a tall barrier that separated the road into two halves. The entrance to the container was blocked by a large generator, probably the very one that powers the gates of the walls that block both openings of the passageway. These containers were found in a few spots around the old town, mostly in areas that are home to what we call anomalous infected territories. No one has gotten a good look at them long enough to describe them, but thankfully they only come out at night and are restricted to the small areas they roam inside. They do usually house some good supplies inside, but are an absolute pain to get into as they are locked securely via a GRE key padlock; and since no GRE technology has been found to be working anymore, those containers will remain shut probably forever.
"C'mon, let's see if that generator still works. If it does, we can pass onto the other side." Aiden explains to me before jumping down onto the road below, his body curling slightly to allow him to roll before he lands so he could 'land' safely.
My mouth pops open slightly in awe and a bit of fear for his safety. 'Damn him and his parkour skills! I swear no normal human can do something like that and escape without so much as a scrape!' I bitterly think to myself as I eye the distance from the platform to the ground. If I had to guess it was maybe a story and a half tall, so I definitely can't copy him without breaking something. 'How the hell am I supposed to get down there without getting severely injured? I don't have any rope, and the ladder is pretty much stuck to the platform... hmmm...'
