The sun cast a warm glow on Avery's face as she stepped out of her apartment building, ready to face the new week. After spending time with Elianna, her heart felt lighter, and as she made her way to work, she noticed that she was humming.
"Good morning, Avery!" a coworker yelled, as soon as she walked into the office. Have you met Elijah, by chance? another colleague asked, pointing to a tall, muscular man that was leaning against a desk nearby. His dark hair was falling over his forehead in a way that appeared both informal. Their eyes locked as he turned to face her; his were a deep blue that made her think of the ocean, and hers were hot hazel that glistened in the sunlight.
Hi, I'm Elijah," he said, stretching his hand towards Avery. She took it, feeling a shock of energy run through her as their hands touched. "Nice to meet you," she replied, wanting to sound nonchalant. But outside, her heart was racing, and she couldn't help but wonder if there was something special about this guy that had just entered her life.
Over the next few weeks, Avery and Elijah found themselves in each other's company more and more. They discovered shared interests and talked about everything from music to their favourite spots in the city.
"I love watching f1 races." Elijah muttered one day during lunch.
When she heard Elijah mention f1, she couldn't help but think about Noah and that night. She thought she was over him but maybe she wasn't. She knew that Noah was not the relationship type of guy, but she couldn't help but wonder if that would've changed if they spent more time with one another.
She snapped herself out of her thoughts and responded, "oh same, I've been watching it since I was a kid". Elijah smiled at her, and slowly moved his hand over to hers.
Have you ever visited the tiny 3rd Street music club? Elijah enquired. "I've heard a fantastic saxophonist is performing tonight."
"Actually, I haven't," Avery said, feeling a pang of excitement at the possibility of them spending an evening together. "Do you want to go together"?
Absolutely," Elijah replied, smiling at her. "It's a date," she said.
Avery noticed the growing bond she felt with Elijah.
One evening as they strolled along the river, the city skyline reflecting off the water's surface, Elijah said, "Hey, Avery." "I just wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying our time together."
She responded, "Me too," cheeks warming with a blush. I haven't met anyone who makes me feel this way in a really long time.
"Then I suppose we're both quite lucky, huh?" His eyes were beaming with sincerity when he spoke. Before she could respond, he leaned in and gently kissed her, wanting for the sweetness of the kiss to convey his love for her.
Avery experienced a strong sense of optimism as their lips parted and she gazed into Elijah's eyes. Perhaps, in the end, letting go of the past would lead her to something even more beautiful than she could have imagined.
