The two of them shared breath for several weighted seconds until Pete's tongue darted out to wet his lip, drawing Vegas's attention and breaking the spell.
Vegas had never been so close to Pete, had barely been so close to anyone before. It set his heart pounding in a way that was very different from the Alphas he regularly dispatched. When Pete's tongue had moved over his plump lower lip Vegas's brain turned to static. He found himself leaning forward, ever so slightly, moving with that pink tongue as it vanished so cruelly.
Vegas took a deep breath and his mind reeled. He had always known that Betas didn't really have a scent, or if they did it was something akin to damp wood or pencil shavings or something dull. All the bodyguards also wore blockers to make them more inconspicuous, but despite being a Beta, Pete smelled nice. He smelled like peaches, and Vegas found himself wanting to see if he tasted the same.
Pete swayed, pressing the back of his head into the column behind him, but Vegas had seen his pupils dilate in a way that had nothing to do with fear.
Lowering his voice in a way that commanded attention, Vegas growled, "What did you tell Kinn about Macau?"
Pete's breath hitched and his knees buckled just enough that Vegas stood over him. Despite this, Pete's voice was steady as he answered.
"I told him Khun Macau had run away from home and gotten lost. I was out bar hopping and just happened to find him. That's all."
Vegas scanned Pete's face for any sign of a lie and was confused when he found none. Over the years, Vegas had become an expert in taking men apart, and he knew when they were lying. Over the years, Vegas had also taken special notice of Pete. It was hard not to as he was usually standing next to Kinn. Pete seemed to take his job quite seriously, though, blending into the background quite effectively. He never reacted badly to anything stressful and had proven himself quite effective in a fight. There were times when Vegas had seen him smiling with the other guards, though, too. It completely broadened his perception of Pete. A few times, Vegas had gotten a glimpse of the most intense dimples he had ever seen on Pete's face. He sometimes wondered what it would take for him to make them appear.
It shouldn't even matter. Pete wasn't even his type. Well, Vegas didn't have a type, other than 'attractive male', but if he did, it wouldn't be Pete.
Suddenly, Pete leaned forward as if in a trance and inhaled deeply. Is he trying to fucking scent me? Vegas froze, his eyes going wide. Alarm bells went off in Vegas's head, but he couldn't pull himself away, choosing instead to slam Pete harder into the column. Pete groaned but didn't try to fight back. Instead, his eyes closed as he bit back a moan, leaving Vegas with a whole new list of questions. He wanted to press his thigh between Pete's legs, to confirm his hypothesis that Pete was very much hard. Hard for him. Hard from being handled. The rush of power Vegas felt bordered on euphoria.
Maybe, Vegas thought, Betas are more my type. He shook the thought off as quickly as it had come. Betas had never remotely interested him either, present company excluded.
"Pete," Vegas purred. Pete's eyes snapped open.
"Yes, Khun Vegas?" Pete's tongue felt heavy in his mouth as he formed the words, shaping itself carefully around Vegas's name.
"If you ever tell anyone that Macau is anything other than an Alpha, I'll rip your dick off through your throat."
Pete blinked, licking his lips again before he answered. Vegas wished he would stop doing that. "What would a Beta like me know? If you say Khun Macau is an Alpha, then he's an Alpha."
