Katherine’s POV:

I just stand there in complete shock, unable to move or say a word. But obviously my mom can still talk, because she starts right off with the accusations.

“So this is why you ran off to Los Angeles?! To be with some boy??” she exclaims.

I try to keep my voice steady, even though every other part of me is shaking. How am I supposed to explain everything to her right now? Not when Harry’s standing right there after we were just kissing. As far as first impressions go, I can already tell that Harry and my mom aren’t becoming friends any time soon. But for whatever reason, Harry still thinks that he can fix the situation, so he sticks his hand out for my mom to shake. She just looks at him in disgust and shakes her head. He slowly pulls his hand back and tries his best to smile.

“So you’re the reason why Katherine ran away?” she asks, looking him over critically.

“No, no, it wasn’t like that, mom. We just met here,” I reply for him.

“I see you’ve wasted no time in getting to know each other,” she says, glancing down at Harry’s arm which is still wrapped around my waist.

Just then, Paul walks over to us, looking concerned and worried.

“You must be Mrs. Everett?” he says.

“Yes. I’m here to take Katherine back home,” my mom replies simply.

“I thought you were supposed to be flying in tomorrow morning?” I question.

“I managed to get an earlier flight. Our flight back home is 6:00 in the morning,” she says.

There’s absolutely no emotion in her voice, and I know this means that she’s just minutes away from losing her temper.

“So…so that means you’ll be staying here for the night?” I ask nervously.

“Yes, I checked into a suite for the both of us. I don’t know what your sleeping arrangements have been for the past couple days, but either way, you’ll be staying with me,” my mom replies.

Great. Now she thinks I’m a slut. I can tell Harry’s just as uncomfortable, except there’s a bit of anger in his expression.

“Mrs. Everett, I think you’re looking at the situation the wrong way. Katherine’s been staying with my best mate’s girlfriend,” he says.

“And I can certainly trust some 18 year old boy, right? I don’t care if she’s been sleeping on the streets, she’s still staying with me,” my mom replies, her voice starting to rise.

I want to protest, but Paul quickly steps in before I can.

“Well that’s what Katherine wanted to talk to you about. She erm, doesn’t want to go back home,” he says.

“What are you saying?” my mom demands.

“That I don’t want to live with you anymore. Honestly, mom, I’m done with every bit of our family,” I say.

The words are blunt, but they get the point across.

“And who do you expect to live with? Your pathetic boyfriend who’s probably going to dump you within a week?” my mom says.
