For the entire ride to Hogwarts, Adelaide sat silently in the compartment, occasionally tuning into the trios conversations, but she never actually included herself in them as she new her brothers friend Hermione did not like her very much. She assumed it was because of her tendency to push people away, and to avoid building any form of relationship with anyone. Especially after Cedric died.
She wouldn't of said she and Cedric were close, but Cedric was the only person she even considered letting inside her walls. He was kind and caring, and the kind of friend she needed during her worst hours. But, then he died, he was ripped away from her, and this made her believe that now more than ever she had to avoid any form of attachment to anyone, for they could be gone in seconds.
As soon as the train arrived at its destination, Hermione and Ron rushed off, as fast as they could, as Harry had disappeared towards the end of the journey and they did not want to spend anymore time around the girl than they had to.
As soon as they where gone she could let her facade drop, a sigh slipping out her mouth and her eyes dripping, before replacing her mask of nonchalance and calmness, and walking off the train. As she walked towards the carriages she saw Tori Lopez, the only person in Ravenclaw she actually spoke to.Tori and Adelaide had a mutual understanding, and they had an unusual type of friendship, for they both liked to sit in each others company whilst reading, but they never felt the need to talk much, but they also comforted each other when the other needed it. Last year, when everyone decided that Adelaide had lied in an attempt to steal her brothers fame, Tori had been the one person to stand by her, In her own way of course.
"Hello Ad, how was your summer?" The girl asked softly, as she turned the pages of her book. There wasn't much Adelaide could really let on about her summer, for it was quite a mess. Her God father had died, not that she'd grown much of an attachment to him, for he was obsessed with her brother as he resembled the Man's deceased friend James. But her God father was still a convict, and even though he'd been charged with something he was not guilty of, they'd never got the chance to clear his name before he died.
"It was, alright." She started. She hesitated before she continued "I read that book you told me about, 'twilight' it was actually kind of good."
"I told you it was!" The young girl smiled at Adelaide. "That book is a classic, and I knew you would like it, no matter how much you insist romance novels are a waste."
Adelaide rolled her eyes. Just then something or rather someone caught her eye. She looked at the carriage next to her to see some boy she didn't recognise."Who's that?" She asked her friend. "Oh I haven't got a clue, he's hanging around with Draco Malfoy and his gang though so he's most likely going to be sorted into Slytherin." As she went to take another peak at the boy, she noticed he was looking around as if he was looking for someone. And then his eyes caught hers and her breath hitched in her throat.
She quickly dived into her bag and grabbed her favourite object, a book. After reading 'twilight' and 'new moon', she made it her aim to finish the books twice over before the end of the month, however she knew she could do it in two weeks.———
The hall was filled with chatter and laughter as new young minds gazed around with excitement. They had all just been sorted into their houses and the ceremony had been excruciating long. Now all that was left was Dumbledores speech before a magnificent feast would appear before them. Adelaide tried to appear interested but she was too lost in her thoughts, her eyes started to gloss over, a result of her forgetting to blink, and suddenly something brought her back, pulled her away from her sudden thoughts. She buried her head in her hands as she felt a pain in the back of her head as if someone was knocking her walls down with a hammer.
Someone was trying to get in her head.
She looked around the hall trying to figure out who it might be, and then she saw him, she new boy. He had curls that covered the top of his forehead, and deep brown eyes, but their weren't filled with warmth. no, they were filled with something else, sadness? Regret? Fear? She couldn't tell . But she instantly closed her mind off as soon as possible.
She learned occlumency a couple of years ago, when she read about it in a library, and decided it would be best to keep her mind closed off, as her head was filled with the plans of the order, and she could not let anyone see them in her mind, as in the wrong hands, this information could do a lot of damage.
Finally Dumbledore was done with his speech and the students who had started to hold their stomachs as they growled, were hardly able to contain their excitement as a feast appeared across the hall. Adelaide admired the first years as their mouths fell open with shock, something to add on to the fact that everything about this school was amazing. But something was off.
By the time everyone had finished eating, they where tired, and expected to make their way to their dorms, as they needed to get sleep for the next day.
She made her way to her dorm quickly as she was tired, but by the time she got to her dorm, she was no longer tired. She chucked on a pair of pyjamas and tried to sleep but fear kept engulfing her, and sleep seemed to escape her reach. So she grabbed a hoodie from her suitcase, stuffed it on over head and grabbed a pack of cigarettes before heading over to the spot she would always go whenever she was restless, the astronomy tower.
