I couldn't take it anymore, not after this. They knew I was gay. They knew I didn't want to get married and yet they do this. This is the final straw. I'm leaving and I'm not coming back.

For almost 10 years, I have been a shell. My parents locked me away in the house without friends. The only contact with people I have is when my parents have events. They emotionally abused me, telling me I wasn't meant to be happy, that I wasn't worth anything, and eventually I became hollow. I never believed any of it but it still hurt. They ripped my happiness away, they ripped my childhood away.

Now, though, I'm leaving. I'm doing what I've been planning to do since I was 18.

I grabbed the duffel bag of clothes I kept ready and the bag of important items I kept under my bed, the ones my parents didn't find when they tore my room apart, throwing away anything that had any meaning to me, that could encourage me to be myself.

I slung both bags over my shoulders and shoved open the secret passage inside my closet, running down the steps.

My family lived in a large house, built by our ancestors in the late 1800's. There were a ton of secret passageways throughout the house, all of which I found while exploring when I was little.

I quickly ran down the stairs and opened the door that led to the backyard. I ran out through the garden and into the woods. Once I got to the woods, far enough in that I couldn't be seen from my house, I slowed down and walked the rest of the way.

I had a car parked in an abandoned parking lot that I could get to through the woods. I got there within 15 minutes and was driving down I-95 within half an hour.

As I drove, I couldn't help the smile that overtook my face. It felt weird because I hadn't genuinely smiled in years.

I was finally escaping. I was escaping my own personal hell. I could finally be happy, I was finally free to be me.

I rolled down the window, letting the cool air slap me in the face and whip through my hair. I fist pumped out the window and yelled, "Woo!" as I drove down the interstate and towards my happiness.
