"You know my brother, too?" Sarah giggles, looking between the two.
Maya was not expecting this. She was fully preparing herself to meet an entirely new group of people. It was all a huge coincidence.
"Yeah, we've all met at a party." Maya responds when nobody else would. Rafe looked at Maya as if he didn't know her. As if they didn't spend over an hour on the beach getting high and talking with each other. But it's not like it mattered, anyway. They really didn't know each other, and it wasn't a big deal.
"That is so funny!" Sarah laughs, looking over to Topper with a wide grin. He nods in response, giving her a little smile.
Topper and Sarah are dating. How long had they been dating? Were they together a few weeks ago when Maya and Topper hooked up? She was only here for a couple weeks and was already messing shit up.
"How about we open up these beers and have some fun?" Kelce breaks the moment, ripping open the cardboard crate of beer that Sarah had just brought over.
Everyone breaks out of the awkward tension they were lulled into as Kelce passes out beers. "Alright, help me untie the ropes." Rafe tells the boys, and they break from the group to undo the ropes from the cleats so they can get the yacht moving.
"So how long have you and Topper been dating?" Maya finds herself asking Sarah. It just slipped out, maybe because it had been the one thing playing on her mind.
"Oh, just over a year." Sarah's eyes seem to glaze over as she thinks about her boyfriend.
"Oh, that's nice." Maya smiles. She didn't know what to say. What was someone supposed to say in a moment like this? It's not like it was Maya's fault that she hooked up with someone that was taken, right? It was on her first day of being in Kildare, it wasn't like she knew. And if she did, she would've never gone into that room with him. What was she supposed to do? Ruin the hangout by breaking the news to this girl? Maybe it was the right thing to do, but Maya also knew that she didn't know the full story.
Soon, the boat began to move and the girls sat at one of the outdoor couches while they waited for the boys to drop their anchor somewhere and come back down.
Maya could see Rafe up there, steering the boat as Sarah talked her ear off. She didn't know why she kept sneaking glances. Maybe it was just because he seemed so mysterious, and Maya was dying to learn more about him. And what better way to learn about him than directly from his sister, someone that knew him their entire life?
"So what's up with your brother?" Maya asks, interrupting whatever Sarah was saying.
"Oh, don't pay any attention to him. He's an ass 24/7." Sarah rolls her eyes.
Maya didn't have any siblings, but she was pretty sure you weren't really supposed to talk about them like that, right? She laughs at Sarah's statement, but when Sarah raises her eyebrow at her, she knows she was being serious.
"Oh."
"How do you know him, then?"
"I met him last night at the beach party." Maya shrugs.
Sarah shrugs. From how Maya was acting, Sarah was sure that her brother and her new friend were just acquaintances, and she felt that she should warn Maya of how her brother was before they became friends, or before she got attached. She didn't want to lose another friend to her brother. "Well, just try to stay away from him. It's for your own good, trust me."
