I walked slightly behind the others, trying to process the thoughts swimming around my mind. Ever since I entered the orphanage, ever since I met the boys, everything had seemed... different. I just couldn't put a finger on what it was. But after the conversation I'd just had with them, something had occurred to me. What if they weren't your typical vampires? Or what if they weren't vampires at all? I knew there was only one way to find out. Only vampires are allowed into kalbaek meadows, that's common knowledge. If they weren't able to enter, then I'd know for sure. But until then, I didn't want to plant any doubt in their minds and make it harder for them.
Jake turned around, having noticed that I hadn't been talking.
'What are you thinking about?' he asked, walking over to my side. I'd noticed how caring he was and had a way of making everyone feel comfortable around him, but I hadn't had much of a chance to talk to him.
'I'm not sure. There's too much to think about. I'm just trying to stop thinking, really,' I told him, not telling the whole truth, but not telling a lie either.
'I know it's all a lot to take in, but once we get to the meadows it will all start making a bit more sense,' he replied comfortingly. 'Hyung, are we almost there?'
'Yep, it looks like we've only got to pass this bit of grass and we'll be there,' Heeseung replied.
We came to the end of the field and reached a brick wall that didn't seem to have any end.
'Hyung, are you sure we've come to the right place?' Sunoo asked Heeseung, walking over to the wall and thoroughly inspecting it.
'Of course,' I answered as Heeseung looked just as confused as the rest of them. 'Everyone knows that the entrance to kalbaek meadows is a brick wall. But only real vampires can pass it,' I reminded them. They stared at me blankly. 'You really never learnt that at the orphanage? I sure am glad I didn't stay there or I might become a zombie like you guys too. Watch and learn.'
I walked closer to the wall and examined it for a few minutes, until I finally found the brick that I was looking for. It was roughly in the middle of the wall and marked with a faint drawing of fangs in red. I brought my middle, index and ring finger of my right hand to it and pressed them down. The bricks surrounding them opened up and I walked through the gap. The sight that met me was stunning.
It was like the whole place had been put through a midnight blue filter, and even though it was still bright outside, the sky was navy blue with specs of mauve and baby blue stars. Even the grass beneath my feet was purplish blue, and the trees surrounding me were sprouting with cherry blossom like purple flowers. In the distance I could make out tall buildings illuminated in light blue, almost like a midnight metropolis. This place felt like a parallel universe. Whilst I hadn't come across anything particularly different from the real world, the overall atmosphere was so different, and the color scheme felt like a fantasy world. The metropolis in the distance seemed so busy and alive, but from where I stood it felt so calm, almost as though I was completely alone in this strange place. That's when I remembered the others.
'Come on then, before the wall closes up again,' I told them, turning to see the pale blue sky and green grass of the real world and suddenly being able to breathe normally again. They all turned to Ni-ki, who looked around at them in disbelief.
'Why do you all look at me when it comes to stuff like this?' he asked, before rolling his eyes and walking through the gap. The moment he stepped through an ear piercing siren sounded and the whole place turned a vibrant shade of red. I clasped my hands over my ears and turned to Ni-ki, who looked shocked.
'What's happening?' he asked.
'Ni-ki, you just set off an alarm!' I exclaimed.
'Let's get out of here!'
We turned back to the brick wall only to see the others looking at us with worried expressions as the wall was closing up.
'Ni-ki! Sophie!' Jungwon screamed as Jay kicked and punched the wall. 'Come on! You can still make it through!' he shouted. But I was frozen in fear, and Ni-ki, for all he was trying, was too tall to get through.
'What do we do!?' Sunghoon asked.
'I think I can make it through!' Jungwon declared. He jumped.
