Chapter Ten:
They danced for hours, although neither were aware of this until they heard the clatter of horse prints in the near distance. “What time is it?” Roselyn questioned nervously. “Don’t worry, we’ll get you home. There is still time.” Jacob said, although he was not sure how true his words were. “There isn’t, what will we do? What will we say if they see I am missing?” Said Roselyn. She hastily reached for her shawl, and scrapes her shoulder against the jagged edge of a rather large stone. Leaving her questions unanswered, “Are you alright?” He questioned nervously. “Yes I’m fine, it’s just a scratch.” She replied. Her response did not matter, for he swiftly walked towards her and hesitantly moved her dress strap aside. “See, it’s just a scratch.” Roselyn said softly. And he did see that it truly was a tiny scratch, but he sees more than that. He sees the curve of her collarbone, the curve of her shoulder, the quick pulse at the base of her throat. He couldn’t help that his eyes lingered to her face. He sees the shape of her perfectly feminine cupid’s bow. Her coppery lashes as she lowered them. And he could feel a wave of desire wash over him, but it is an unfamiliar feeling. Jacob knew he’d desired girls before, and has certainly satisfied them. However, those desires seemed to be a hunger, a sort of need that his body wanted. He’s never felt such a pure, sweet desire for someone. And his hands have certainly never trembled before. Jacob was stunned to have this desire, and he knew deep down that it frightened him. He tore his eyes away from this intoxicating woman, “We should go.” He said. “Right.” She replied awkwardly.
Roselyn was already in front of him, and even the way her hips moved made him feel these unfamiliar desires. Some strange sound had caught her attention. She stopped short and half turned to him. They stared at each other briefly. And soon she was kissing him. And he was astonished at her actions. He wrapped his arms around her, and realized how small she truly was. It seemed almost unfair to put such large arms around her, so he held her delicately, very aware that her body was trembling beneath him. She tasted so sweet, like peaches and sugar, and she is warm and soft. When their lips finally parted for air, it felt unreal that that had just happened. He looked to see her reaction, and realized he couldn’t read her face. His ability to read people seemed to have left him the moment they had met at the Founder’s Day party. Her copper eyes fluttered open, and she did not look blown away by what had just happened. It pricked at his ego slightly. A hollow in the pit of his stomach formed. What had just happened? After that kiss, shouldn’t she be swooning at his feet? Jacob wanted to pull her back to himself, to pour into her everything he was feeling in hopes that he’d learn what she is feeling.
When they reached her house, and made their way to her balcony, she thanked him. For what he was unsure of, but he knew he was not ready to part from her. So when she reached for the latch of her window, he did not let go of her other hand. “Will you rest now?” He questioned. At that moment, he could see the frighten look that crossed her face. And Jacob realized what she had thought he’d meant. He certainly did not mean it that way. He could feel his face turning red. Am I honestly blushing right now? He thought to himself. In his entire life, after all the women he’s been with, and asked that same question, he’d never known this was possible. “Aren’t you tired?” She questioned, clearly unsure of what to say in a situation such as this one. He wanted to explain what he’d meant, but couldn’t find the words. He decided he’d just speak his mind. “I’ve never been more awake.” He replied. Wonderful, now you’ve done it. You sound like a rabid animal. She’d probably love to push you off this balcony right about now, he thought. Instead, she stepped closer to him, lifting her head, and began to gently kiss him. And now he felt he lost all control of himself.
He leaned down, and cupped her face with both of his hands. Roselyn seemed to sway dizzily on her own two feet, causing him to press her gently against the edge of the balcony’s banister for more support. Roselyn let out a small gasp, lips parting under his. She placed her hand on his chin; the other gripped the banister behind her to keep herself steady. Jacob was unaware of his surroundings, it seemed it didn’t matter that they were out in the open, able to be interrupted at any moment. It only mattered that he didn’t stop touching his mouth to hers. Still, in the back of his mind, he knew what he was doing was wrong, selfish even. She didn’t know everything, which meant he was lying to her. I’ll tell her everything, he thought. Roselyn’s hand that was once pressed against his chin made its way to the back of his head, reaching to grip locks of hair. Perhaps not at this moment, he thought. Just then, light shone on both of their faces. They both parted from each other simultaneously. “Leave, now.” Roselyn said in a hushed voice. “Ros-” “Jacob, please. You being here will only cause more trouble.” Roselyn said pleadingly, her breath sounding unsteady. She tried to fix herself, playing with her hair, straightening her dress, however her face was completely flushed. Jacob grasped the back of her head, and kissed her once more, “Until next time.” He sighed. Roselyn simply nodded. Light poured out as someone pulled on the curtains. Jacob climbed off the balcony just in time. “Charlotte. What is the matter with you? How could you enter my room without me asking?” As irritated as she sounded, Jacob could hear the relief in her voice that it was only Charlotte.
