"Stop touching the radio," Nicholas said as we drove down a deserted road to the Yacht Club. "My car, my radio." He seemed more agitated than normal right then. The radio station was set to country when he turned on the car. What I wanted was some pop or R&B.
I stopped the radio on a station that was full of static, mostly to annoy him. Static was still better than country. "Fine."
He cursed to himself and switched the radio to a regular station. That station was playing more upbeat songs which I enjoyed. "I only invited you because I knew it would make my mom happy."
"Well, I'm only coming because I knew it would make my mom happy."
"Giant pain in my ass," he mumbled to himself. I had a hunch that he wanted me to hear that. I mean, he wasn't wrong. "You have an interview on Wednesday at the Yacht Club," he told me in a monotoned voice. "You may borrow something of mine to wear for it."
"Awesome," I said, resting my head back against the seat. "What's the job?"
"Waiter. Is that cool?"
"I fucked a waiter once," I told him, tapping my knuckles against the window. "He wasn't that good."
His face resembled a pissed off expression. I could tell that he was biting down on his teeth by the sudden twitch of his jaw. "Why would you tell me that?"
"Well, he sure did serve," I said with a smirk. "But he was terrible at his job."
"I really don't want to hear about this."
"You're the one that got the conversation going." I wondered what that waiter was up to those days. Did he find out where the hole was yet?
"I told you they have a waiter position open at the Yacht Club," he exclaimed. "I didn't ask for your hook up history. So, are you going to go to the interview or not? And please don't tell them that you once fucked a waiter."
I stifled a laugh and played with the scratchy collar of the shirt Nicholas loaned me. How did rich kids survive in such monstrosities? "I actually fucked two waiters on two separate occasions. One of them was my now ex-boyfriend, so you can't call that one a hook up." I laughed when he tensed up. "I'll go to the interview and act like the snobby rich kid you want me to be."
"You are so annoying," he said with a long sigh. "I'm waiting for the day you can go five minutes without saying anything dumb."
"That may take a while," I told him. A song I hated began to play on the radio and when I went to change the station, Nicholas slapped my hand away. "So, tell me, how many girls have you slept with?"
While he was caught off guard, I quickly changed the radio station before he could stop me. He seemed to be trying to form words but nothing would leave his mouth. "That is really not an appropriate question to be asking."
"So, what? Are you like a virgin or something?" I said it mostly as a joke that I knew would piss him off, but when he went completely silent, I knew I had my answer. "Wait, oh shit, seriously? You're a virgin?"
So much color rushed to his cheeks that his face was almost as red as a tomato. "Please, shut up, Seth."
"But you've had girlfriends before." Jen would take a few weekend trips throughout the year to come visit us, and each of those times she mentioned Nicholas having a girlfriend. It was impossible to think that he was a virgin.
"It doesn't mean that it went beyond some mouth stuff and touching." At least he got some action out of all those relationships. "Now, stop talking."
