Jolene: A Different Perspective

Donna May took a seat on the back of her tailgate, breathing in the crisp autumn air. She had always loved watching the sun set over Sugar Creek. It was like watching an oil painting come to life. Sugar Creek felt like home; something she never quite got to have. The only other time she felt this was when she was with Jolene. Jolene was a charismatic girl with bright eyes and speckled cheeks. Her auburn hair would flicker like a fire in the summer winds. As Donna was fixed on the view, a voice came from alongside the truck.

"Hey Stranger." It said with ornery in it's chords.
Donna blushed & glanced down at her boots. Jolene rounded the corner and perched her self on the tailgate as well.

"Where've you been I've been looking all over for you?" Jolene asked, wrapping Donnas arm around her.

"Oh you know,"Donna sighed. "Thinking and things."

Jolene tipped the brim of Donna's hat, "You and your thinking, you ever not thinking about something?"

With a furrowed brow, Donna kicked her feet up.

"Well what're you thinking about?" Jolene adjusted her self so they could see each other eye to eye in the truck bed.

"Just, I don't know, you ... me ... us..."

The two girls paused. It became so quiet you could only hear the chatter of birds in the field.

"He talks about you in his sleep, yah know?" Donna muttered, picking the dirt from her nails. "Makes me wonder if what we're doing is right..."

Jolene whipped her head around, "What're you talking about?"

"I'm saying, he really loves you, Jo'." Donna hopped down from the tail gate. "It's not right for us to be doing this behind his back."

"He might love me, but I can't love him & you know that..."Jolene yipped.

Donna wrapped an old saddle rope around her hand, not knowing what to say next.

"I know, Jo, but he's my best friend ... Either way I can't win..."

"Well Donna May," Jolene looked her dead in the eye. "What if I said I loved you?"

Donna grinned, biting her lip, "Well I'd say I loved you too."
