“So why exactly does he want to meet with me?” Kali asked, sipping on her coffee.
Iver had decided to meet Kali as himself, in a cafe. As a human, like her. They looked like a couple out on a date, although Kali’s men could be seen hovering. She’d told them to take the day off, yet one never managed to. And would always ring the others if something went wrong. It seems one had sensed something not quite right with Iver, and all four of them were here. Ears hidden behind tied and braided hair, or hats. They looked human, sure, but there was still this off feeling about them.
Apart from Iver, those four men, Elven warriors, were the only people who knew what she was and they had bonded themselves to her, to protect her till death. Even as she told them not too. She didn’t need to be protected, she could protect herself.
“He wants to know if you hold any more information.” Iver gave her a sideways look. “Besides, when else are you going to meet my family?”
She chuckled, taking a longer, more thoughtful sip of her drink. “I can do it tonight, but he meets me. Not your glamoured version of me.”
“Okay.”
“Okay? You’re not going to start an argument.”
“It’s your life, why should I be getting in the way of that?” Iver stood, finishing his drink. “I only glamoured you to keep you safe when you were younger. If you’re ready to start letting other people know who you are, who am I to stop you. Ten?”
“Nine, I know the address.”
“Don’t be late.” Iver waved at her men, blowing a kiss to Kali as he walked down the street.
Kali was Fae. Astrological Fae. One of the last of that race. Fae followed the elements, earth, fire, water, air (and their subcategories, like plants or ice). Then there were the royal classes of Fae, Astrological and Solar. Astrological Fae were all to do with stars and shadows and darkness. Whereas Solar Fae were to do with the sun and light and heat. Complete opposites but both as powerful as each other.
Aldrich had watched the wars that had nearly wiped out Fae, he was protective over them and their customs. Iver knew they were taking a risk telling the demon what Kali was, especially her status, but Kali could hold her own. The one thing Iver knew about the assassin was her immunity to most forms of Drycræft, besides she had killed demons like Aldrich before. If she didn’t think she could take them on, she wouldn’t risk it.****
Kali turned to the group of males, Elven warriors and rolled her eyes. So protective, Elves were once they set their eyes on something, but this whole protective Alpha male cliche was getting old, tiring.
“You are to all take a day off.”
The four men looked up from where they played cards together on her coffee table. They had to be near her, to live with her. And her whole thought process was ‘why choose which man could sleep in her house, when it could be all four’. They could share her, right?
“I mean it.” She didn’t even move from checking her manicured nails. “I need one night away from all of you.”
“You had one, two weeks ago when you met with that Mage.” Xhalh, the eldest of the elves by days, spat the word. “You're cheating on us, Kali?”
They all stood, the card game long forgotten, a threat -that didn’t exist- creating a crater between them and their women. They would kill the man who had stolen her heart.
“What’s his name?” Orist demanded.
Kali blew on her nails, ignoring the four warriors who stood around her. Each of them were similar ages, and had all found her. For some of them their friendship stretched decades together before they had found and fallen in love with her, the others had only met them years prior. Elves followed the seasons, and some were gifted with powers or connections. They were a warrior race, like the fae but with easy differences. Fae were light skinned with long pointed ears. Most Elves were often darker skinned with short pointed ears. Though of course, it depended on where they lived.
Xhalh, meaning blessed, was the eldest, he had short hair and the darknest brown eyes. He was gifted with the power of telekinesis and was the attacker of the group.Zaos, meaning ‘of the Gods,’ had long braided hair, often tied out of his way. He had the power of light manipulation and was the assessor, he would watch anyone in any room, he knew everything that happened in a room, always. He and Xhalh came from the same troop of Elves living in Africa.
