"You're gonna be late, Danny," Beth told the teen as he finished his cereal, putting the bowl in the sink.

"I know, I know. Give me a minute." He replied, running into the living room to grab his bag. "Hey, Kass." He said, offering a small smile to his little sister, who was sitting on the couch. "Not going to school again today?"

"No." She replied quietly, staring at the TV.

"Why are you watching the news--?" He began to ask, but stopped, his face going a bit pale as he saw the headline. "Spring Miles High History Teacher found dead this morning due to car wreck." He felt a shiver go up his spine as he reread it, trying to process it. Dead? Mr. Hudson died?

He didn't like the man in the slightest, but something about it just felt... something felt so scary about that. He wasn't sure why. Car accidents happen every day. People die every day. So why did that make the hair on the back of his neck stand up?

"You shouldn't watch this, Kass." He said, taking the remote from her and changing the station.

"Why not?" She asked, eyebrows furrowed, annoyance gleaming in her eyes.

"Because you're too young to see things like this."

"I wasn't too young to watch Mom and Bridget die." She replied angrily before standing up and leaving the room. Danny couldn't say anything, his lips only slightly parted as he stood there, a defeated look on his face. He quickly grabbed his bag and turned to leave, slamming the front door behind him, beginning the walk to school.

"Aren't you going to be late to school?" Maverick asked, watching as Sera flipped through the first diary. She didn't reply. "Sera, you've been reading that all night. Take a break already."

"I'm a vampire, Maverick. We don't require breaks." She spoke, glancing up from the journal before swiftly looking back down at it.

"What about your little boyfriend? Isn't he going to wonder why you're late?"

"Why do you care all of the sudden? The other day you were scolding me on all of it, and now you suddenly are worried about me getting to school on time." She said, flipping the journal closed.

"I was just thinking that if you're so intent on going to school you should try to get there on time, have good grades and all that. It'll make you seem less suspicious." He said, moving to sit down beside her. "Why don't you let me look through the journals while you go to school? You can keep up appearances in town, and I can get some of this work out of the way."

Sera looked over at him, an eyebrow raised slightly. "Alright. Fine." She hummed in response, passing the journal over to him. "Be careful with them." She told him before standing up, grabbing her stuff, and leaving.

She trusted Maverick. The most she trusted anyone. He may be an annoying little shit at times who doesn't know how to mind his own business and see the bigger picture, but he was truly like a brother to her. They were family. They had been since the day she turned him all those years ago. While Oliver was still alive, the three had been a trio. However, she and Maverick had always had a special connection.

Since he was turned, they'd been bonded, stuck to each other by the hip. She had threatened to leave multiple times, as had he, and sometimes, they even did separate for a little while. However, they always found their way back to each other. They were-- in a friendly or sibling way-- like soulmates. They needed each other. When she turned off her humanity after Oliver died, he was the one to bring her back from the edge and stop her murder spree. He had always been there for her.
