We eventually did leave that cave, and when we did, some of Sires's buddies caught up to us on our way to the arena. I still couldn't understand why we had to go there...but anyplace was fine for the moment being...it just felt odd I guess you could say, how Sires nabbed me. And how he knocked me out, only to tell me that I had special abilities. Eh...couldn't do much about it. I think he knew I was deep in thought, because he slowed his pace down and met mine.
"What's wrong Alex?"
"Oh nothing. Just thinking."
"...are you thinking about your family?" He asked. That question dug deep. I'd been trying to avoid any questions about family matters for some time now. But in all honesty, yeah I was thinking about them. I sighed and rubbed my forehead.
"Yeah. Yeah I was thinking about them."
"I think about family a lot too. How they used to live." He said as his voice wavered a bit. I could tell that meant the memory hurt him. But, I had to ask...
"What happened to them Sires?" His face grew as pale as snow, all color almost instantly vanishing from it. He actually started shivering, recalling whatever the incident was, and his hand twitched around a fire spear he was holding.
"For your sake Aris, never ask that question again. You hear me? Never."
"Yeah I hear you I'm sorry..." I said as his voice strained slightly more, and he let out a long exhausted sigh.
"Look I'm sorry I acted like that, it's just...things happened..."
"It's...ok I understand."
"No. No you don't understand Aris, you never will unless I tell you." He said with a stern and steady voice, as he made his spear disappear, and sat on a log.
"Take a seat. I'll tell you the details." He said, as I followed those instructions, sitting on a log across from him. He waved his hand over a stack of logs I between us, and created a fire.
"Let me tell you a story." He said as he leaned closer, and put his head right above the roaring flame. He moved his hands around as the image of a car driving down the street appeared in the fire. It rolled and rolled, until it was struck my an oncoming car. He wiped the damaged car away, as the image of a young girl, maybe four or five, appeared in the fire. It showed her running into the street to pick up her toy that fell, as a truck came barreling down. Then the images ended. I didn't need to look at Sires to tell he was in tears, I knew what those images were. His parents were killed in the car crash, and his little sister was hit by a T.D.F.G. truck that was coming to retrieve Sires.
