"A soldier without teeth is a soldier dead."

   - Article One, Section One : The exemplar of a Soldier -  The Book of Vesta

There has never been a single moment in my life where i've felt unprepared, surprised. Yet Violet Sorrengail, youngest daughter of THE General Sorrengail, managed to make me experience both in under twenty-four hours.

I had just finished packing my rucksack with only the essential supplies, when my father sent for me in his study. Throwing the bag over my shoulder, I made my way out the door and down the hall to stand in front of The General at attention.

"At ease soldier." He sighed as he sat up against his chair. My arms slowly slackened at my sides, connecting behind the base of my spine.

 "You called?" I questioned,

"It seems that General Sorrengail, although against better judgment, has seen to send her daughter Violet into the Rider's quadrant this year."

My brows furrowed in confusion. As far as I knew, Violet had a severe medical condition and hasn't trained to be a Rider.

 "Sir?"

He turned and stood to look out the window to his right, surveying his city like he owned it. I suppose he did in some right. "She's weak. Dangerous for a Sorrengail. That's why I am assigning you to her for the time being. We need her to succeed. Her Success is your success, understood?"

My face hardened. Message received clear as day. She dies, you die.

"Yes sir."

The General turned and nodded in my direction, his cold eyes scanning my attire. "Good, I see you received the armor I had made for you from Codagh's scales. It was quite difficult to convince him to relinquish them. Don't waste this gift, I expect nothing but perfection. Anything less will not be tainted in the Melgren name. Remember where and who you come from, and have confidence in who I made you. Don't fail me, Vesta."

It was a struggle to not flinch and scream in his face.

"I won't Father."

He considered me for a moment, considered the hardened gold of my eyes, my mother's eyes, and turned to face his kingdom. "Good. You're dismissed."

Holding my breath, I saluted him once more and sped out the door.

Goodbyes weren't said between a General and his soldier.

A/N What'd ya think? ;)

Also - The Book of Vesta is sort of a spin- off of the Book of Brennan. Although centered around Vesta lol. It'll give more background of Vesta's past.
