Flashback - 4 years before parapet
Absolute warmth cocooned her body, her limbs numb with pleasure.
The complete serenity of the moment was rare for someone like her, and she knew she could only ever find it with the male lying beside her.
Brennan's chest cradled her weary head as he read to her, his left hand playing with the waves of her moon-white hair. Her mother's crimson cloak tucked beneath her chin and draped over their legs amplified the calming heat. His deap, steady voice calming her nerves from her father's latest visit. Vesta knew Brennan's visits were rare enough, so she took every advantage she could and treasured their time together, she wouldn't let her father's sessions ruin their moments.
Vesta tried, she really did, to keep Brennan out of the special trainings her Father had for her, yet the male always had the skill to see right through her and to the root of her worries.
She'd never really been close with the Sorrengail's, competition and pride always keeping the families separate. Every interaction was always filled with a biting malice, inhabiting any civility between them. Her father loved the animosity, said it drove her to be better, though she never really found true pleasure in beating down children like her, much less those in the same boat as her. Their families were more alike than she'd like to admit, though she doubted lilith Sorrengail went to the same extremes as her father.
Over the years, her rivalry began to grow. All the hours of beating each other down for the sake of their parents grew into true jealousy and loathing. But she only had those feelings with no one more than Brennan and Mira Sorrengail. Violet was always a little thing, too small and fragile for their beastly games. She supposed she had a soft spot for the girl, not that she'd ever admit it out loud. Mira seemed to take Vesta's superiority the most personal, the fact that Mira was older yet Vesta had received more training seeming to grate on her nerves. Both of them were born into war, Vesta was just better at it.
Brennan on the other hand got under her skin more than anyone she'd ever met. Growing up, the male was the only one who could garner a reaction out of the hardened girl. He pushed and pulled at strings within her that would push her to unfathomable limits. She loved and hated that about him.
They spent countless hours together. At first it was spent studying one another, trying to figure what made the other tick, how they moved and thought. Their competitive natures never quelled, but what once was full of hate, soon turned into a bond full of curiosity, compassion, and friendship.
Eventually when it came time for Brennan to choose his quadrant, the time spent together became less and less. Brennan's time spent learning to be a rider, and Vesta's trainings intensifying. Though their bond never frayed, they wrote to each other often and the boy would visit as often as he could.
That's what brought them to where they were today, basking in each others presence for however long they had left.
Vesta didn't believe in soulmates or twin flames, but if she did, she thought it might feel something like this.
