A Dragon without its rider is a tragedy, a rider without their dragon is dead.

-Article One, Section One : The Dragon Rider's Codex

Vesta couldn't decide if she wanted to put herself out of her misery first before Violet Sorrengail inevitably killed her by dying.

She decided that it would be almost impossible to keep the girl alive. Just watching her try to lug around her sack full of ridiculous miscellaneous items was exhausting enough to wonder the intelligence of such a decision.

Leaning against the opposing wall, bathed in shadows, Vesta silently observed Violet's interaction with her older sister Mira.

Chuckling under her breath, Vesta watched the youngests' expression as Mira discarded a considerable amount of useless shite from her bag that would've more than likely got her killed.

Vesta couldn't understand the sentimentality of something like a book, let alone indulge in it enough to consider it valuable. She liked to wager the importance of something by gaging how well it could keep you alive. Weapons? Killing. Food? Sustenance. Armor? Protection. Practicality kept you alive, nostalgia got you killed.

Although, she supposed she was a bit of a hypocrite.

Fingering the crimson cloak adorning her person, she tried to justify her decision. A cloak was practically armor, it'd keep her warm in the frigid nights.

But she knew better, the loose fabric could get her killed on the Parapet. The truth was, she couldn't bare to part with it. The cloak belonged to her mother and was one of the last pieces she had of her. The thought of leaving it caused a knot of anxiety to form in chest.

She'd risk the wind for her mother's memory.

Hearing Violet scoff in incredulity, pulled Vesta from her deliberation. Raising her golden orbs, Vesta scanned the book in Mira's hand.

"And what's this one about then?"

"Killing." I deadpanned as I stepped out of the shadows.

Mira whirled around in surprise, a dagger already held in her grasp. She halted as soon as she met my molten gaze.

"I'm surprised you know how to read" Mira snarked. Slowly sheathing her weapon.

Crossing my arms, I looked her up and down before replying, " Being a Melgren has it's advantages."

Simmering, she turned her nose up and looked down at me. Despite our considerable height difference, and not in her favor.

"And why did you decide to grace us with your presence today Melgren?"

Smirking, I replied"Trust me Sorrengail, it wasn't my decision. It seems our parents believe Violet is as useless as everyone else. I've been assigned to her for the time being. She'll be under my protection."

She hurled back like I'd struck her, her face scrunching in disgust. The expression really didn't do anything for her. " Oh hell no! What was mom thinking?! You'll kill her the first chance you get."

Even though her assumption of me was bothersome, I shrugged it off and shifted my feet. "As much joy as it would bring me to put your sister out of her misery, I have my orders. Violet will be safe in my care."

"Hey!" Violet exclaimed in outrage. "I don't need to be in anyone's care! I can take care of myself."

I let out a dry laugh at that. "Really Violet? You can take of yourself? I'd like to see you try. We'll see how long it takes you to be begging for  my help." Her scowl only made my smirk deeper.

With that I turned, sauntering away to the courtyard to make final preparations.
