Karl and I strolled along the concrete path, the winter sun shining through the clouds. The shop windows looking like crystals, winter decor everywhere you looked. Our shoes lightly patting at the slightly slippery ground.
The lack of words between us was deafening. A million thoughts in our heads.
"So, uh, if you don't mind me asking, why were you so- uncomfortable with Kyle around?" I broke the thin ice of silence as my words swirled in the air around us. "Uhm, well, I have a bad past with him." I hesitantly nodded, more questions filling my mind. "Well, do you wanna talk about it when we get back? We could change into some comfier clothes, drink hot chocolate and chill?" He smiled at the idea, "Yeah, that'll be good I think."
When we arrived at my dorm we both got changed into our comfy clothes. Karl and I would always visit eachothers dorms, so we always keep spare clothing there for situations like this.
It was relaxing, both of us sitting cross-legged infront of the fireplace. We had gotten our hot chocolates in town on the way here, nesting it in our hands to keep it warm for as long as possible. The marshmallows bobbing up and down above the chocolatey concoction.
"Can I warn you before I start? You might hear somethings you might regret listening to." I gave a strong nod, taking a sip of the warm liquid.
Karl sighed before starting his dialogue, "At the start of Year 5, before you knew me and before we were even in this school, I became friends with Sapnap and Dream and they were actually really nice. We became this happy little friendship group. In Year 6, a new boy joined: Kyle. Dream had became friends with him and sort of adopted us into the group." Karl took a breath, preparing for the next wave of memories to hit him. "Towards the end of Year 6, I had told them about my sexuality, Sapnap and Dream were actually pretty supportive, Kyle on the other hand, was raised being told being gay is a sin. And instead of being mature about it, he encouraged the others to make fun of me. The bullying got so bad that I left school and rejoined a year later, in Year 7 when I met you." He looked over at me, his lashes slightly lowered, "I always felt bad because Sapnap and Dream have messaged me so many times saying their sorry but it's like- hard y'know?" I nodded my head again, looking from Karl to the glowing flames.
"The reason I'm encouraging you about breaking up with him is because we both know about him cheating on you with that girl in my dorm, but I've seen him with like- 4 other girls. I just didn't want to tell you because you were so stressed out with exams and-" I looked over at Karl, a soft smile displayed on my slightly pale face, "Karl, you know I'm really proud of you right? You've gone through so much and yet you still care for others more then yourself."
Karl laughed in response. "And that bit about Dream and Sapnap- I had no idea. I thought Dream was just some idiot who just hated my guts, with Sapnap being his loyal servant or something."
Karl looked down, a content smile on his face, "Y'know George, I really want to forgive them, I really do. It's just- I dont know what's stopping me."
"Why don't you talk to them tomorrow at the match?" Karl perked his head back up at that. "The ma- OH- the quidditch match against Slytherin tomorrow? But Dream is playing and Sapnap will probably be with his other friends, won't he?" I rolled my eyes. "Karl, Dream and Sapnap, from what you were saying, have been friends for a long time. I'm sure Dream would atleast invite him to watch him play."
"Mm... well that's fair I suppose..." Karl said giving in. "Can we finish the rest of the hot chocolate now? It's getting cold." I laughed and nodded my head, still grinning.
Karl and I sat there for a few more hours talking more about eachothers past more, enjoying our drinks. The fire dancing in blazing colours, twirling around whilst sparks like tiny fireflies flew fading away into nothingness.
