Chapter Three

Mariana held onto her sister and tried to whisper sweet nothings, trying to calm her down when Lena came over to Callie's other side. Lena rubbed her hand up and down Callie's back, her heart breaking for her oldest daughter. When they finally get Callie to calm down they hear a set of footsteps coming into the kitchen. When Mariana and Lena saw it was Stef they let go of Callie and when Callie opened her eyes and sees Stef she tenses up.

"I think we need to talk, Cal."

"I'm tired. I don't feel like doing any talking right now."

"Cal. We need to talk."

Callie walks past Stef and brings her glass to the kitchen. "I know we do. I just don't want to right now."

"You don't have a choice."

"What do you want me to say, Mom?" Callie asked, angry. "You didn't ask me any questions. Instead, you just lectured me. Told me if I continue on the way I am that I would end up dead. I needed a hug when you found me! I needed one when we were in the car alone and I sure as hell needed one when you hugged everyone when we got home last night and weren't even bothered to look at me!" Callie was yelling by the end, tears in her eyes. "You have no idea how much it hurt," Callie told her and ran past Stef and Mariana and up to her room, slamming the door behind her and jumping into bed, hugging herself.

Meanwhile, downstairs Stef was standing, frozen, shocked at the outburst. After she recovered she turned and looked at Mariana.

"What was that about?" Stef asked and saw Mariana shake her head. "What? What's wrong?"

"You have no idea, do you?" Mariana asked her, walking away.

Stef, still confused, looked at her wife who was standing in the kitchen. "What's going on?"

"We need to talk," Lena told her, placing her mug in the sink. She sees Stef about to open her mouth but stops her, "No. Not here. Our room."

Lena starts walking towards their bedroom, Stef following her. Once they get into the room Stef closes the door and turns to face Lena.

"What's going on and why does everyone seem pissed at me?" Stef asked, sitting down on the bed, and watching Lena pace back and forth. "Lena?"

"Did you really tell our daughter "One of these days you're not going to be so lucky and I'm not gonna be able to take you home because they're gonna be taking your body to the morgue" Because jeez Stef, she needed you. She needed you to grab her and pull her into your arms, not state what she already knew." Lena told her, "Stef, She needed her mom." Lena watched Stef's eyes water, "I can imagine how scared you were. I can imagine how mad and sad you were and whatever other emotions were going through you last night, but Stef," Lena grabs Stef's hands, "She needed you. She didn't need to be lectured."

"I was just worried, Lena. I was terrified. But she went with him willingly."

Lena was quick to cut Stef off, "No, she didn't. She has scratches on her legs and even one near her eye, She was going to walk away, Stef. She just didn't go with him voluntarily. She told me this morning about it."

"Lena, last night was intense."

"That's no excuse for not even asking if she was okay, Stef."

Stef looked down, "I know. I made a mistake. I'll go talk to her."

"Let her calm down first. I think she may have also gone back to her room to get some sleep. She looked exhausted when she was down here when I found her outback. Maybe just let her

get some sleep."

Stef nods and walks into their bathroom, closing the door. "I'm going to have a shower, Lena." She yelled through the door. Lena shouted back "Okay"

Lena sighed, got off the bed and made her way back downstairs. She made her way to the kitchen where she saw Brandon and Jesus.

"Brandon, do you know where Mariana is?"

"She's out back, Tried to ask her a question but she just stormed off." Lena nods and walks outside and sees her youngest daughter in a chair, on her phone. "Miss Thing, what-"

"I just needed some air, Mama."

"Understandable." Lena sits beside her, silence overcoming the two of them for several minutes. Lena looked at Mariana, noting she had put her phone down. Lena decided to wrap an arm around Mariana and smiled when she leaned into her. "Do you need to talk about it?"

"What's there to say? I heard what Callie told you." Mariana wrapped an arm around Lena's waist. "I just- I just don't know why she constantly puts herself in danger. Why does she do many things that other teenagers would never do?"

"it's a survival instinct, Mari. Since she was in foster care for so long, helping others is a reflex. It's why she took so long to trust us."

"Still though, It was extremely-"

"-Stupid. I know. Look, all that matters right now is that she's home and she's safe."

"Think she'll ever stop getting herself into trouble?"

Lena scoffs, "Yeah right." Mariana giggles. "I hope to god she does, but I'll only be able to do so much once she graduates."

Mariana nods and cuddles into Lena. "It's cold out here."

Lena laughs, "Come on Miss Thing, let's go back inside."

While the mother and daughter are coming back in, Callie is still in her room, back in her bed under the covers. I'm such an idiot. Why did I offer to go with Diamond? I just screwed my life up more. Were thoughts going through Callie's head. She was kicking herself over her stupidity when she heard a knock on the door.

She sighed. "Come in." She called out.

"Callie, can we please talk?"

"I guess so," Callie said and sat up.

Sorry, it took so long for an update. Would've been yesterday but my wifi was down.
