It wasn't difficult to keep up with Ifem in that race.
The ancient wolf was powerful, but he was also tired from having lived too many centuries and he was blinded by the rage of having been deceived by Wednesday, a fragile little girl, who had even teased a witch and who had defeated nothing unless Jericho's despicable Crackstone.
Wednesday held on to Enid's back for what felt like decades, while the she-wolf seemed to wade through the darkness as if her bright eyes would allow her to light the way.
It didn't take long before they found one of the containment cages. The cage was well hidden in the bush, isolated and empty 'cause it was the cell that Enid was supposed to use on the full moon nights.
Enid stopped in front of the cell, as if she was afraid of it, and she let Wednesday get off her, who stroked her face to calm her down.
-I won't let you go in there Enid, don't worry. - Wednesday reassured her, before Ifem reached them in speed, so Enid pushed Wednesday away from her with her snout to prevent the black wolf from overwhelming her, separating the two of them.
Ifem had changed his focus, now he only wanted Wednesday to carry out his delusional revenge. But he hadn't thought on that Addams had a guardian who would defend her from anyone.
Enid immediately attacked Ifem, allowing Wednesday to move into the battlefield and to open that massive containing cage.
Convincing Ifem to go in there with kindness was out of question, so the two wolves set up a fight worthy of a full moon night.
Ifem was certainly stronger, but Enid had the dexterity and speed of a young she-wolf on her side. So the fight lasted longer than it should.
Wednesday understood that Ifem wanted to bring Enid to the point of exhaustion to make her turn human again, so she moved away from the cage to recover her faithful hatchet. She wanted to help Enid but she didn't know how to defeat an ancient wolf.
Her little head, however, was about to remind her that she had defeated something even more powerful, a witch.
-Enid, push him in the cage!- Wednesday ordered to the she-wolf when she saw that not only Enid, but also Ifem was gradually returning to his human form.
So Enid hit him again with a paw that now looked more like a hand, pushing him to the entrance to the open cell, but the man managed to hold on to the bars.
Wednesday didn't waste that opportunity and a smile appeared on her face as she threw her hatchet towards Ifem, hitting him in the chest and feeling the blade pierce his bones.
It reminded her of the good old days of chasing her little brother around the castle with Gomez Addams's axe, an heirloom stolen from an Italian museum years ago.
The backlash drove Ifem into the cage and Wednesday immediately ran to lock it with a mechanism designed to prevent the caged wolf from opening it from the inside.
She looked right after for Enid's eyes, who was yelping as she slowly turned back to her human form.
-Enid, I'm here...- Wednesday was trying to say, getting closer to her. She couldn't wait to see Enid in her human form again, to be able to touch her skin again.
"What a stupid thought."
She felt Enid breathe, she felt her heartbeat, as she reached her, kneeling in front of her.
Enid was naked, covered in blood, (most of the blood was Wednesday's) and leaves but she was alive and awake, even if she hadn't yet lifted her face to look at her. She was shaking and touching her neck, as if she was still trying to rip off the collar.
