Chapter 2

A moon had passed since Ruby had been brought to the clan, injured and weak. Silverpaw had been checking with Wingpaw about the she cat's progress. Silverpaw had began to realise how hard a Medicine cat's job really was, when Ruby had started bleeding again after a walk on her feet. Ruby's case was more than they'd expected, since they had to be careful so that they didn't harm her kits. Ruby however seemed to enjoy the visit, even if it was a rest stop. It was time for Ruby to go back into forest surrounding the barren land VolcanoClan calls home. Flarestar came out of her rock and onto the clan meeting area to send Ruby off, Silverpaw realised she hadn't seen much of her mother since her apprentice ceremony, which she'd expected of course, but now she realised Flarestar had been missing so much it almost seemed suspicious, now that she thought about it whenever she had asked 'Who's my father?' Flarestar would hesitate and then answer 'H-He was a wonderful cat and- yeah let's leave at that, a wonderful cat." Then Flarestar would shut off. It only bothered her now. Her mother's constant hesitation, what was it for? Was Flarestar hiding something? Silverpaw couldn't be sure but it was something to think about. "Sagepaw?" The tom had just come out of the apprentice den, pouting. "Tigertooth says we can't train today the bossy furball. Says he has to say goodbye to that rouge, what was her name again? Sometimes I wish Wingpaw didn't heal her." Silverpaw's eyes widened where did Sagepaw's sudden prejudice against rouge and loners come from? Was it from his father? The former rouge by the name of Ravenclaw? Why would a former rouge's son hate what his father was? Silverpaw shook her head to clear the thought. "But why Sagepaw? Why?" Sagepaw flicked his tail. "Because Mousebrain, haven't you seen the signs?" Silverpaw backed away. "What signs?" Sagepaw lowered his ears, teeth bared back in a snarl. "You Foxbrain! You don't know the signs? Who in StarClan's name raised you? The signs of love you idiot!" Silverpaw flinched at the Twoleg word 'idiot'. Must've learnt from his father, she thought. Where did Sagepaw get this sudden outburst? Ugh, so many questions, she thought.
