I stared into his eyes trying to figure out what was going through his mind. It felt like we had been sitting there for hours but it had probably been a couple of minutes. My heart was beating hard in my throat and my hands were sweaty. I looked at Ace and for a minute I felt like I had known him my whole life and then my thoughts came back to reality. I could see that he was struggling to find the words to tell me what I wanted to know.
"I don't want you to think I'm crazy...." his voice was husky as he trailed off. He gazed far into his thoughts somewhere behind me and again I could see his internal struggle.
"I wont" I said trying to reassure him but he it seemed like he didn't even hear me.
"In quantum physics" Ace said as he cleared his throat and brought his gaze down to meet my eyes. "its said that the deeper you explore into an atom you start seeing that there is nothing there besides energy waves." he looked at me waiting for a reaction.
"Okay?" I looked at him confused.
"So based on that then we an assume that everything is made up of energy." He spoke slowly and studied my face with every word he said. "so if everything is made up of energy then everything is connected by waves." he explained but I still had no idea were he was going with that "that means that you can create waves and those waves can affect other waves and so on and now if you look into cosmology yo-..."
"Ace, I don't want a science lesson! I want to know what's going on!" I interrupted looking straight into his eyes. He exhaled loudly and ran his hand through his messy hair. We stared at each others eyes and everything else disappeared and it was just us two. I was lost in his eyes. Those icy eyes of his. Then a voice broke us out of our beautiful, intense trance. Startled I looked to the side towards the door.
"Harley! please help me with these books" I could hear Mrs Owens pushing a cart across the thin carpet.
"I'll be right there!" I yelled and looked back at Ace. He had his head down but his gaze was still on me.
"We're not done" I stated and stood up and turned around and started to walk away. I heard him stand up and out of his chair and his hand pulled mine back and spun me around. My hand was so close to his chest I could feel it barely brushing against his jacket. We weren't even half a step away from each other and his other hand dropped to rest on my hip.
"Harls... I need a friend" his eyes just stared at me and I couldn't help but look down. "Please don't give up on me. I promise I'll tell you everything but I need you more than you know" He looked lost and desperate and I could feel my heart pounding and I felt like I was running out of breath. I kept looking down at my shoes, then I felt his fingers on my chin as he tilted my head up and made me look into his eyes. "I know its a lot to ask for, because we just met but trust me Harls." chills ran down my spine and I just nodded. He gave me a weak smile and with all I had in me I turned around and walked away towards the squealing sounds of the old metal cart wheels turning. With my heart pounding in my chest I powered walked my way to Mrs Owens. She was pushing the cart towards the locked away part of the library. She was wearing a long old fashioned dress that had dulled out flower pattern.
"So where do you want me to put those?" I asked trying my best to smile.
"oh sweetie thank goodness you're here." she smiled "they all go in the lock away room but I have to go to a meeting so please be a doll and put this away okay?" Mrs Owens smiled and I smiled back.
"sure Mrs Owens" I answered trying to act normal.
"I'll probably be back after you leave so just leave the key in my drawer" she explained handing me a long old skeleton key. I took the cold key and closed my hand around it.
"Okay" I smiled.
"I'll see you at lunch" she said with a smile as she walked away. I stared at the key and then at the cart. There must have been around 50 books or so on the cart but without anymore hesitation I took the cart over to the wooden door that lead into the private part of the library. That side held books that were more valuable or were meant for staff only. The sound of the library front door shutting startled me but I knew Mrs Owens was now gone. I stuck the key into the keyhole and slowly turned it. It made the wood creak and then a load clank noise before I could pull the key out and turn the knob to open the door. The far away sound of the library door closing again made me turn and now I knew he was gone too. I was disappointed and confused and maybe even worried but there wasn't much I could do at that point I just had to finish my job and go to class and see what he would say.
I pushed the cart passed the door and into the room. Everything in this room was made out of old cherry wood. It was dark and beautiful. The room was a long rectangle with high sealing that was framed with book shelves that covered every inch of the wall. There was no windows to interrupt the beautifully made shelves and the books that sat on them. A long wooden table was set exactly in the middle with twelve chairs around it. It was there for teaches' use but since the room was empty I moved all the books from the cart to the table and began separating them into piles. I had to divide by Author or by subject but it depended on the book type. I sat at one of the tall wooden chairs and read all the titles and authors. Thats when I came across a thick water blue book. "Quantum Physics, Modern Theories by Dr Michael Lee Frankfort". As soon as I saw the book Ace's words came rushing into my mind. In quantum physics its said that the deeper you explore into an atom you start seeing that there is nothing there besides energy waves.
I set the book aside and tried to finish fast enough to get a chance to glance through it. A soon as I was done putting the books on the shelves I sat back down at my chair and opened the book. As I went through the pages I realized I didnt understand much of it. It talked about quantum entanglement and how an atom worked the deeper you went and the theories that where based around that. I closed the book and thought about what it all could mean and how that could make someone want to kill someone but couldnt come up with an answer. I now I really wish I would have let him finish. I put the book on the shelf and walked out of the room locking the door behind me. I walked to the Mrs. Owens desk and put the key in the drawer. I pulled out my phone and started typing a text.
Me: hey where are you?
As soon as it sent I got a reply.
Ace: at the football field.
I walked out of the library and out past the locker rooms until I reached a wall with 5 different entrances. I poked my head out of the first and the grey stadium seats came into view and then the big green football field and on the other side were the platinum guest bleachers and there I could see Ace just sitting down on the top row. I ran down the stairs and found my way to the entrance to the field. I walked past the track and onto the grass. As I walked through the field a light breeze passed me by dancing with my hair and brought up the smell of freshly cut grass. I looked up at Ace and saw he was staring at me. I walked to the small opened gate and found my way up the shiny bleachers.
"hey" I said as I stood a row down from him. "what are you doing here?"
"thinking" he answered looking at me.
"about?"
"everything. I just got here and its already a mess"
"it is?" I questioned trying to figure him out.
"yeah... it feels like I have known you forever or something and I've never had that connection with someone before so to be honest I dont want to mess it up" he looked down at his black converse
"you wont" I said offering my hand.
"you dont know that" he said taking my hand and pulling me towards the spot next to him. I stepped up to the next row and sat down next to him. He pulled out a small black velvet sack from his pocket. "just promise you want say anything"
"I promise" I said staring at the little black bag in his hand.
