To say he was surprised would be the understatement of the year; of course, he wasn't expecting to hear his best friend, who lived 20 miles away, in the police station he happened to be at.
After he heard, what he thought was, Marta's voice, he felt hope... hope that he wasn't alone after all, and that he would have one of the people he trusted the most by his side.
He moved with careful and deliberate steps, his eyes darting around, taking in the details of his surroundings. The reception desk was toppled over, papers scattered across the floor, a testament to the haste with which the officers must have left.
As he moved further into the station, Benny's pulse quickened. He had a mission—to find supplies and, hopefully, Marta, and quickly. He imagined the worst scenarios: her lost, scared, or worse, in a place she didn't know. He had to hold on to the hope that he would find her quickly, alive and well. The first thing he wanted to do was rush towards the sound and yell out her name, but he couldn't be that reckless.
He navigated through the narrow hallways, his ears straining for any sign of movement, any indication that he, in fact, wasn't alone.
The gloom seemed to intensify as he entered a larger room—a conference area, judging by the remnants of a long-abandoned meeting. The wooden table was splintered, chairs overturned, and a sense of abandonment hung heavily in the air.
Benny's gaze remained fixed on the hallway leading deeper into the station. He knew he had to be cautious, to avoid attracting attention, whether from potential zombies or any other lurking dangers. He took a moment to steady his breath, his heart pounding in his chest, and then he ventured forward.
His footsteps were soft, almost silent, as he moved down the hallway. The flickering emergency lights cast eerie shadows on the walls, making every corner seem like a potential threat. His eyes scanned each room, his body tense, ready to react at a moment's notice.
As he reached an intersection, his heart skipped a beat. He heard a faint, shuffling sound coming from one of the rooms. He froze, his instincts telling him to retreat, but his determination pushing him forward. Clutching the baseball bat tightly, he edged closer to the doorway, his breath held.
Peering into the room, Benny's heart sank. There, in the dim light, he saw a figure hunched over, its movements jerky and unnatural. A zombie. It was a horrifying sight, one that made his stomach churn with a mix of fear and disgust. He watched as it aimlessly wandered, its vacant eyes focused on nothing.
Benny's mind raced. He knew he had to be quiet, to avoid attracting the attention of the creature. He carefully backed away from the doorway, his heart racing. He needed to continue searching, but he also needed to find a way to deal with the threat without alerting other potential dangers nearby.
Moving further down the corridor, he found an office with a partially open door. Taking a deep breath, he stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room for anything that could help him. He spotted a desk with scattered papers, a discarded flashlight, and a fire extinguisher hanging on the wall.
His heart pounded as he formulated a plan. The fire extinguisher could be his best chance. It was heavy, and if he could discharge it at just the right moment, it might disorient the zombie and give him a chance to escape.
Gripping the fire extinguisher, Benny took a steadying breath and returned to the doorway where the zombie still roamed. He positioned himself at a safe distance, his heart racing, adrenaline coursing through his veins. With a swift movement, he pulled the pin on the extinguisher and released a cloud of white mist directly in the zombie's direction.
The creature let out a low, guttural groan, its movements becoming more erratic as it staggered, disoriented by the sudden burst of gas. Benny seized the opportunity and rushed past the zombie, his heart pounding as he kept his eyes trained on its twitching form. He couldn't let his guard down, not even for a moment.
