I'm almost there.
Essence's wings battered the air around her, every strained beat clawing at her muscles. She squinted against the wind, against the sun high above, feeling her pulse in every artery. Her heart was beating fast — not just because of the exertion of flight, but also from the sheer anticipation that coursed through her body.
Of course, she knew what to expect. The visions of her first day at Jade Mountain Academy, the most prestigious school in Pyrrhia, grew stronger and more vivid with each passing day. And with each passing moment, the mountain itself expanded before her.
I'm almost there.
Her sixth hatching day had passed recently, an event that finally convinced her parents, Moonwatcher and Qibli, to let her attend along with her best friend, Swellow.
The fiery Silkwing was only a year older than the hybrid herself but nearly twice as energetic. She along with her parents Luna and Swordtail lived in the Rain Kingdom with Essence's family and it was in this way the two grew so close. How they ended up there was... complicated. Her parents had spoken up against Queen Mantis' warmongering and fled to the Hivewings for safety until a failed assassination attempt finally landed them in the lush, fruit-filled tropics.
Essence didn't need mindreading to know that her best friend was charged up. It had been almost a year since Swellow underwent her metamorphosis and grew wings, and she was more than eager to use them — and she was damn good at it, too, both outrunning Essence's parents and keeping up with her at the same time. Though, to be fair, Essence wasn't the most athletic of dragons.
"Getting tired?" Swellow teased, smacking her wingtip to get her attention.. It was embarrassingly obvious that Essence would need to take a break soon.
"No," Essence responded pointedly."I'm not stopping until I reach Jade Mountain."
She wanted to feel the shadow on her scales and the stone on her claws, she wanted to finally be there, a moment she'd been longing for for... Clearsight knows how long. She wanted to become the greatest seer ever, rivalling even that of the deity-like figure that lived over 2,000 years ago.
More worryingly, however (and perhaps a testament to her goal), were the odd visions coming to her lately.
Standing in the heat of an enormous and scarred Sandwing, lips parted in a half-uttered promise.
Lounging on a rock ledge, books and scrolls sprawled before her, next to a smallish Skywing whose physical ability was compensated by his near-endless knowledge.
Clashing with her best friend, and losing.
Placing a gentle talon on the shoulder of the shattered husk of a once confident and strong Seawing.
Most of these visions came in quick bursts and left just as fast as they propagated, but these ones lingered in her mind. In all of these visions, she said these words aloud:
"Fear the Whispers."
Nobody knew of these visions except herself, not her best friend, not even her mother, the first seer in millennia.
"Sure you aren't." Swellow broke through her thoughts with a smirk. "Let's see what you think when you catch up with me." And she dove to gain speed.
Essence peered into the heavens again to see the clouds circling the twin peaks of the mighty Jade Mountain. "The exact same thing," she panted to nobody in particular.
This would be the start of her and her friends' Journey.
A Journey so great they would be remembered as heroes and cement their legacy into the history scrolls!
I've made it.
