Sometimes, in an effort to improve themselves, one strives to become smarter. Maybe inspiration strikes in the form of an artwork, or a film, or even just a kind word from a friend. Most of the time, though, people wish they were smarter in hindsight.
Y/N had always thought that he was on top of the game in that sense. The Last City was supposed to be a safe haven, protected from invaders of various other species from various other planets by the immortal Guardians. They were beings granted powers by the Traveller, a god of the Light. He didn't buy it, though. Too many things had gone wrong in the past (and could go wrong in the future) for the city to be impenetrable. To that end, Y/N wanted to become smart before something horrible happened, so he had been sneaking out of the city to learn how to fight the enemies of humanity.
He was certain the Vanguard, the collection of the strongest and smartest Guardians who commanded the rest of their kind, was corrupt. There was no way immortality didn't distort the Guardians' sense of morality and understanding of what the people of the City needed. Even more damning was the fact that they now let the Fallen, or Eliksni as the Guardians called them, they'd allied themselves with to stay in the tower. Enemies don't become friends that quickly, not without foul play or threats at hand.
There was one thing Y/N and the Guardians agreed on though, which was that the Hive could go straight to the pits of hell. They were another race of aliens that resembled bugs, reproducing through larvae and building nests. Everything about them was terrifying, and it didn't help that their language was incomprehensible, not to mention tied to their magic rituals of horror. He had heard about it from his only trusted Guardian buddy, Aaron.
Speaking of, the tall Hunter had just transmatted into Y/N's apartment. The Guardian was a ghost gun dealer, selling disassembled weaponry from the Vanguard to the citizens of the Last City. He only had a couple customers, all people who were worried about potential attacks from the Fallen. Y/N was one of those customers, but he had his sights set a little bigger.
"Sup, Y/N." The Hunter tipped his head up in greeting to his friend. Y/N put down what he was working on and stood up to greet him, excitement visible in his expression.
"Did you find anything?" Aaron knew what he meant. He had asked his Guardian friend to find what he could on the Hive language. It was used in their magic horror show rituals, and since Y/N needed every edge he could get, he figured learning the meaning for the hive symbols, or even at a more complex level their speech, would be useful if not mandatory in the future.
"Honestly, if it ever came down to it, you'd have better luck trying to teach a Thrall English than trying to learn Hive. The Vanguard knows next to nothing, and even the cryptarchs are clueless. It's still completely a mystery." Aaron explained. Y/N's heart sank. Without that advantage, the Hive would remain his biggest challenge in combat. He wasn't immortal like the Guardians, so he had to be extra careful. The Hive were the most unpredictable of his enemies.
