The Fallen presence in the forest had lightened up slightly, which Mivroh was perfectly fine with. She was one of ten Hive Wizards specifically assigned to a non-combatant force. Her group was full of specialists in territorial rune magic, meaning they were extremely efficient at slicing up terrain to benefit their comrades.
Since they were non-combatants, there were two traditional Hive platoons assigned to protect them. Most of the Hive's resources were reserved for fighting against Guardians, since they were the biggest threat. Mivroh's group, however, was one of very few tasked with keeping the Eliksni (or Fallen as the humans had come to rename them) at bay on Earth. There had been a squadron of just over thirty Eliksni foot soldiers that had been a serious thorn in Mivroh's side. As the leader of her team of Wizards, she always felt responsible when they were unprepared for an enemy attack.
Yesterday, though, when she had suggested that one of her two offensive clusters head out on reconnaissance to find out where these infuriating Eliksni had been camping out, the Hive soldiers came back with a report that the enemy camp had been swept in a one sided battle. It was convenient for Mivroh, but it was also a little scary. Given the lack of casualties on the non-Eliksni side of the fight, and the fact that her recon team only found two different types of ammunition in the Eliksni corpses, it seemed likely that it was a Guardian patrol that did the dirty work. That was terrible news for all of them, since Mivroh and her subordinates didn't stand a chance against even one.
[We move in the opposite direction.] She spoke to the other Hive telepathically, hoping a quick reaction would get them out of range of the potential Guardian threat. When she was certain all the troops had started moving, she joined the rear, floating next to her fellow Wizards.
Mivroh was hopeful that the Guardian commanders wouldn't feel the need to expend troops to deal with her platoon, since they weren't threatening the Last City or the Vanguard. The best case scenario was that they would simply be passed over.
Satisfied with the distance she had put between her team and the destroyed Fallen campsite, she let the others know through telepathy that she was going to go lay down some territorial magic around the perimeter. Some of the Wizards bid her good luck as she picked up one of the protective runes an Ogre had been carrying. It had the symbol for "door" on it, which was the basis for a membrane. It could let Hive pass freely, while stopping anyone else, though it wasn't incredibly strong. It was more of a warning bell for the Hive inside.
Worrying a bit about what might trigger that warning bell in the future, Mivroh began preparing her magic. Before she could even get a few seconds into the chant, her comrades started panicking, sending her telepathic messages.
[We're under attack! Guardians-]
Before the other Wizard could even finish speaking, the link was cut, presumably by her death at the hands of the Lightbearers. It was the worst case scenario. Mivroh clutched her rune tightly and levitated as quickly as she could back to her platoon, fearing the worst. As soon as she had a visual on the clearing they were using as a camp, she knew it was over. Hive corpses littered the ground, and Solar Light burned on many of them. Whatever Guardian or Guardians had attacked had done so quickly and left.
