Akademi's hypocrisy

After a couple of days, I entered school with my brand new uniform. It was far more elegant than the sailor one. White and red matched so well and, despite being stylish, it still managed to appear sober. I'd never liked how short skirts were, so I wore light-brown tights as usual.

I had told Aoi that I thought of joining the council. It looked like she was just waiting for someone to approach me and convince me into doing it, as Megami had mentioned a few times last year that she would've longed for me to be in the same school as her, and thought I'd make a good member of the council. I may have been suitable enough to be a part of the Student Council, but even if I weren't, I wouldn't doubt Megami would make me join so she could still be my friend - out of all the students at Akademi, there were at least a dozen whose parents were Saikou employees, and if the rumour that Megami was seeing people outside those who were respectable enough to join the council and be worthy of her attention spread in the corporation, her parents may have heard. The chances of something like that happening weren't slim, as it might seem. Her name was continuously on the gossipers' mouths, who also happened to be Musume and her friends. And, as I'd learnt, their parents held important positions in the Saikous' industries and were similar to their daughters.

Considering the minor 'mistakes' she had made in the past, her parents trusted her less, especially when it came to getting involved with people her age. After placing my bag at my seat, I headed to the Student Council's room. It was empty, probably because it was early and not everyone had arrived. The staff and the council members had to arrive at school half an hour before the rest of the students, at half past six in the morning, but not everyone sternly respected that rule.

I knew Kuroko Kamenaga was already at school, as expected; she had promised to introduce me to my duties and to the other members before classes began. There was only another person in the room. She was organising some papers, in a relaxed manner, but, after hearing my footsteps, she immediately turned, although I had just surpassed the door. "Hello." I greeted.

"You must be the new member, Saori Kihara, right? I'm Shiromi Torayoshi." "What's your role?"

She looked at me, confused, but then replied.

"Ah, yes... sorry, we don't usually refer to them as roles. I mean, that's what they are properly called, but everyone just does what they have to without others questioning it. I could say I'm the treasurer." I smiled. I knew things here wouldn't be as tense and formal as Kuroko presented them, but clearly the atmosphere was looser for some. And the president or the vice-president must've informed everyone about me and the duty I'd be taking on, because Torayoshi straight-up asked:

"I heard you're replacing Kuroko as the secretary. Well, expect a lot of paperwork because the teachers are simply lazy!"

"Are they really?"

"Yes. Schools, especially Akademi, are exorbitantly focused on bureaucracy, and lots of teachers prefer to hand their paperwork to us, instead of taking care of it themselves. The school must ask for permission from parents for literally anything. Being a student is hard enough, but on top of that we also have this..." "You're exaggerating it. Teachers could use a bit of free time too." retorted Kuroko, who had just entered the room.

"Where are the others?" she asked.        "They're late, as usual" replied Shiromi.  The vice-president sighed, but then regained her spirits, beginning to instruct me on what I had to do as the secretary of the council. The tasks weren't that hard, though there were enough papers to complete, for sure. After that, she suggested I go patrol the school outside. That meant just taking a walk and assuring that students weren't doing anything remarkable.                                                                                                                                                            I strolled around the school for a while, until I reached the plaza, a sort of garden with benches, hedges and a fountain in the centre of it. I continued doing my duty and, since everything was okay, I proceeded. My attention was caught by a girl's loud chatter. She was whining angrily to a guy who was holding a book... I had already seen him. His surname was Yamada, but I couldn't remember his name. I didn't have to make any effort to recall it, because the noisy girl with two gigantic pigtails was basically screaming it.
