Chapter 21: The right moment

Immediately as Akaashi walked down the stairs he noticed how much lighter the air had gotten. When they rejoined Kenma and his mom the Omega was smiling while helping her set the table for dinner. Kuroo smiled and swiftly moved to take the bowl of rice he was carrying from his hands. Kenma frowned at that but Kuroo offered a conciliatory kiss and proceeded.
"No heavy lifting during pregnancy." He grinned.

"That was neither heavy nor am I that far along yet." He mumbled the words under his breath but sat down and let Kuroo do the rest regardless. Bokuto sat down next to him and soon they were all assembled for dinner.

It was an easy ordeal. Much easier than Akaashi would have expected with everything that happened today or rather in these past weeks. But right now everyone seemed determined to just enjoy the moment and keep each other distracted. It was greatly appreciated.

As the evening proceeded he even considered telling them about his pregnancy but decided against it. To him this was good news but all things considered he didn't know how they would take it. The happiness that lingered in the moment seemed fragile and he didn't want to be the one to break it.

With a frown he observed the increasingly darker sky outside the window.
"Kozume-san, it's gotten pretty late. You can take the guest bedroom if you like."

She followed his gaze but shook her head.
"That's quite alright. I don't have it far from here."

He could feel Bokuto next to him tense, undoubtedly this reminded him of the night Hinata got injured. Gently he intertwined their fingers and gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. She promised that she'd text them when she arrived home, realizing herself the sudden tension in the room. It resulted in them silently sitting on the couch, while Kenma's gaze was fixated on his phone until finally the reassuring message arrived.

"See? All is well." Kuroo soothingly brushed the hair out of his face and Kenma nodded while leaning into the touch.

"What now?" Bokuto asked with more energy in his voice than Akaashi would have preferred.

"Going to bed. We all have work tomorrow. Both you and Kuroo need to get up early." The ace groaned in frustration, giving Akaashi the slight inkling that enforcing bedtimes with their kids would be a whole new challenge. He smiled at the thought. His hand subconsciously wandered to his stomach again and caressed the small area that soon would swell to expose the life growing within.
He couldn't wait to feel their kicks, the subtle movements proving all of this to be real.

"Fuck, where is my phone? Has anyone seen it?!"
Kuroo ran around hectically. Having been thrown out of their rhythm proved more challenging than first assumed. Both him and Akaashi were on the brink of being late yet the chaos seemed to increase like static growing slowly in volume the more they tried to fix things and get out of the house quickly.

It was one of the few days Akaashi was expected in person at the office, to confirm schedules for projects, work assignments, and team meetings. It had to be this out of all days that he had to wake up late. His mind was all over the place as he tried to rectify the situation, when suddenly a hand grabbed his wrist stopping him in place.

After the initial surprise made his heart jump he calmed seeing Kenma, still very much half asleep holding him in place.
"You're too loud." he grumbled while holding up both Kuroo's phone and Akaashi's bag. Relief washed over him and he leaned down to give Kenma a quick kiss.
"Thank you! I'm sorry but I gotta go"

He quickly took his things as did Kuroo, who pulled the smaller into one last embrace before following Akaashi to the door. Outside they kissed each other goodbye before running off into different directions. Kuroo to their car while Akaashi headed for the train station. On better days when they had time, Kuroo would sometimes drive him to work but sadly their destinations where pretty much in opposite direction leaving no room for that today.
