Rococo's POV

"I apologise if this doesn't look as good as the last one. It was, uh, a little rushed."

"No, it's fine! It still looks great!"

Spaceboy's finally returned to the walls, and it did take him quite a while. I suppose there was no real need to rush the painting then, as he arrived several, SEVERAL weeks after i finished. At least he's here now. He's standing in front of the easel, considering the painting. He likes it, apparently, though I don't all that much.

"Hey, the canvas is smaller too! That's convenient." He exclaimed, breaking me out of my reverie, "Bringing the other one up the ladder last time was absolute hell."

I'm not sure what to say to that, so i just change the subject. "What took you so long to get here? It feels like its been ages since I last saw you."

Spaceboy blinks at me, appearing slightly startled at the question. "The rescue mission, remember?" he replied.

"Oh, of course! How did it go?"

Spaceboy cleared his throat. "Good, but also bad. We did find the Space Pirate- he was living under this pile of debris. It took a long time to find him. We were making our way back to the Mercury Retrograde and everything was fine, but then we got attacked by this robot who-"

"Attacked!? Are- Are you alright?-"

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine, calm down. This kind of thing happens all the time." He interrupted, brushing it off. "Remember how I said there was runaway AI living there? Some of them were- well- normal. Just like regular people, y'know? They were really impressive, super human-like. But this one was different. She looked different, and she was way more dangerous. So she grabbed this one space pirate and was laughing and everything, but then she stopped and was like 'what the hell are you guys supposed to be??'. Then the pirate punched her in the face, and they started fighting. She injected him with this weird yellow acid, and i shot her, and then WE started fighting, and kinda stabbed me in the shoulder-"

"Spaceboy, I swear to god."

"It's fine, really! What else do you expect from a Space Captain? Getting hurt is just part of the job."

I sighed. "If you say so."

"Turns out, she was actually trying to kill some other thing, something called a worker drone. I'm guessing those are the normal AI. She helped us with our injuries. and then let us go."

"...That's a slight bit confusing." I said.

"Yeah, I know. But it's better than her actually wanting to kill us."

"I suppose so." I picked up a paintbrush from the small table, playing with it in my hands absent-mindedly. Spaceboy carefully lifted the canvas from the easel.

"Are you leaving?" I asked, trying not to sound panicked.

"Mhm, I'm gonna go find Sweetheart now and tell her to come to Otherworld. I hope your painting works. It's really good, so it probably will!"

Spaceboy's visits have been so brief recently. I wish he'd stay longer. I don't want to seem clingy, so i try not to make that much of a fuss. We've basically just met, after all.

"Farewell! Good luck with Sweetheart!"

"See you! I'll visit again soon, okay?" He waves at me and disappears through the hole in the wall. I can hear him walk away and then the metallic clink of the ladder. Great. Now it's just me again. I've gotten used to being alone but ever since I met Capt. Spaceboy, it feels unbearable now. I'm not quite sure why. I place the paintbrush i was fiddling with back on the table and I decide to take a stroll through the walls. Perhaps my billionth yet. Maybe I should go look for some food while I'm at it. I barely eat anything these days.
