Stomping through the open caverns wasn't very hard for Diana, she had done so many times with her dad as a kid. The only difference this time was that she was with a group of terrorists who wanted to turn back time for their own gain. Diana's eyes flickered from Teddy to Voller, the man's hips shifted up and down as he stumbled through the rocky terrain. There was even a moment where Klaber had to grab his arm to keep him from falling. Diana snickered "Not used to rough environments Doctor?", without looking at her the doctor answered
"On the contrary, Miss. Jones, I have been in much worse situations".She rolled her eyes, Mauke had gotten the idea to handcuff Diana to him due to her trying to escape numerous times. This of course bothered the Doctor but he wouldn't make it obvious. Teddy was surprisingly quiet, he held onto Diana's hand like a child who didn't want to get separated from his mother. It wasn't long until they found the entrance to the cave and entered the dark and damp formation. The mud, bugs or pain in her wrist bothered Diana, but then the sound of running water came into her ears. Her body forced her to plant her feet to the ground, successfully tugging Mauke's arm back.
Mauke turned while noticing the new found fear in her eyes and tried to gently pull her into walking again. It worked until they came up to a rapid river with an old bridge strong across it. "Oh hell no" Diana muttered, her heart speeding at an unhealthy rate. Her hands grew sweaty, throat dry and she began to shake. Unholy fear filled her body, to be in front of one's phobia is one thing, to have previously been almost killed by it just a few hours ago is another. Diana found it hard to breathe, as if the water was already in her lungs. Voller stared at the water and then back at his former assistant.
He contemplated what to do in his mind, the bridge wouldn't be strong enough to hold everyone's weight but there was no other way. "Klaber, go first" he spoke, Klaber swallowed hard and placed his foot on the first plank testing its stability. He practically sprinted across the bridge before giving a thumbs up once safely on the other side. Voller went next, holding out his arm for Klaber to help him. Once both men were on the other side it was Mauke's turn. Teddy shot Diana a look thinking the same thing she was- "This man ain't gonna make it". The bridge drew downwards and wobbled as the three of them crossed it, it wasn't until they were in the middle that they all heard a crack.
Time slowed, or at least Diana could have sworn it did. The wood broke, Mauke fell through dragging Diana with him. She let go of Teddy's hand and pushed him back to make sure he didn't get hurt. Before I hit the water, I made eye contact with Voller. The fear in his eyes was similar to mine, but he wasn't worried over his own life, he was worried about Diana's. The water was cold and harsh on her body. It thrashed her around like a rag doll, Mauke however was just trying to stay above water and fight against the tide. Him and Diana worked together to claw their way towards the side. Mauke grabbed onto the roots growing over, slowly but surely he pulled both of them closer to the men on land.
Diana closed her eyes tightly and held her breath due to the water constantly washing over her face. Voller, Klaber and Teddy all leaned in and grabbed Mauke's arms to pull him up. Voller let go as soon as he could reach Diana and instead tugged her up. He fell back and held her closely in his lap. Due to her trauma, or maybe their connection, she wrapped her arms tighter around him and buried her face in his jacket. He placed a hand on her head, stroking her wet hair and murmuring comforting words.
All three boys watched the odd display of affection, Klaber was the one brave enough to clear his throat "Hey boss?, we should get a move on". Voller nodded but Diana didn't move. The memory of her drowning kept repeating over and over, she almost died twice now. Two days in a row, the waters almost took her life and for what?!. Voller stood up, grabbed the keys from Mauke and freed Diana from the cuffs. He then tossed the keys, took off his jacket to wrap it around Diana and scooped her into his arms. Klaber offered his help but Voller denied it. He continued leading the group with the shivering woman in his arms
"I ha-ha-hate yo-you" her teeth chattered, "I know" Voller mumbled moving forward. It's true, no matter what feelings were growing in him, it didn't matter since Diana hated his guts and would probably kill him if given the chance. Soft murmuring could be heard from deep inside the cave, in the distance was Helena and Indy looking down at an open tomb.
"So that means it must have worked" Helena, "Oh it works, Ms. Shaw" Voller interrupted "Mathematics works". Indy and Helena both glanced down at the Beverly frightened Diana, "What did you do to her!" Indy asked with a gravely voice. "I saved her from growing, twice. Have you ever saved her Life, Mr.jones or have you only ever avoided it?" Voller was snarky with the archeologist, "As we conquered space, we will conquer time".
Klaber went up to jones and grabbed the dial to take it but indy didn't let go. Swiftly taking out a gun and pointing it at Diana's head, Voller glared "You've already lost your son, Dr.Jones. Your wife is gone, do you really want to lose your daughter?". Indy froze, unsure of what to do to ensure his daughter's safety. The gun was on safety but, of course as Voller knew, it was too dark to notice.
Indy held out the dial to Klaber who took it muttering a polite "thank you". Voller nodded putting his gun away while still holding onto Diana. Diana's brain was slowing down, processing nothing as it tried to reboot itself. So she didn't realize how the scene looked; her holding tightly onto Voller's jacket while his hand laid protectively around her waist. On any other occasion Helena would have yelled "Get it girl!" but in this instance she instead wanted to say "Kill him girl!".
Now holding onto both pieces of the dial, Voller's breathing became heavier with excitement. The pieces clicked together perfectly, like a dust mechanical jigsaw puzzle. Lifting up a pocket watch from the greek inventor's tomb, detaching the watch from its chain, Voller held it up for Indy and Helena to see.
"History's greatest moment" he smiled before placing the watch into the center of the dial, on its on the dials started to spin like a giant watch. Ticking, and memorizing everyone. This gave Teddy to the chance to pounce onto Klaber and tackle him to the floor. His gun slid across the floor, "Throw me the gun!" Indy yelled to Teddy who obliged, Voller grabbed Diana by the wrist and dragged her down. The sound of gunshots snapped her out the trance she was in, causing her fight or flight to kick in.
Looking around she spotted teddy huddled in the corner covering his ears, escaping Voller she crawled across the floor to indy. "Get him out of here" He ordered his girls, the women stood up and grabbed the boy to lead him to safety. "This way!" Teddy led Helena with Diana right behind her. They were about to go through a passage to lead them out the cave when the sound of Indy yelping stopped them. "Dad!" Diana called out, staring horrified at the bullet wound in his shoulder. The older man fell back onto a rock for support as he took in deep breaths. Blood soaked his jacket quickly, Klaber used the vulnerable moment to raise his gun to Indy's face.
But in a flash Diana dashed over and threw herself over his body. Shielding her father from he gun and glaring harshly at Klaber, a mix of anger and slight betrayal.
"Stop!" Voller pushed down the gun to aim at the floor, Diana placed herself at her father's side to inspect the wound. Indy's mouth twitched in a smirk, "Now what?" he grumbled thinking he was the main reason for Voller's intervention. Voller side staring at Diana as she focused on stopping the blood. For a moment their eyes met, his gaze softened as he sighed. "Bring them" he wait for Diana to finish wrapping her father's arm to grab her and lift her to her feet. "Come along, Diana" he pulled her along while Mauke brought Indy.
Crossing the bridge again, Diana's body instinctively held onto the nearest thing which was unfortunately the doctor. He placed an arm around her and hugged her tightly as they crossed. Trying to cover her ears with his hands knowing the mere sound of running water made her nervous. It was dark out, the Jone's were placed in the back of the van where Diana continued her care on her father. Everything was starting to blur to her, right or wrong, good or bad, friend or enemy. Who knows who's gonna have her back...or who's gonna stab it.
