Aurora
Aurora sat silently in the cabin of the truck gazing out the front window at the smoke still swimming through the air slowly turning from a dark grey to a white. "Does that mean the fire's going out?" she asked.
Eugene glanced over at the window and the smoke and gave an affirmative "Yes." before the four reverted to back silence.
Aurora can hear Tara and Rosita talking from through the glass, but they're talking too softly for her to make out anything. Judging from the fact that she can't hear Rue, she assumed that she was just sitting there staring at Tara, trying to calculate whether she was a threat or not. Aurora, bothered by the silence, tried again to start a conversation, "I wonder what happened to them?"
Her words fell upon deaf ears and Aurora dramatically sighs and leans her head against the back of the chair. She wished she was sat in the back of the truck, where she usually sits so she could annoy Rosita and Rue, but Abraham forced her to squeeze into the cabin with them for her safety. It annoyed her but she could tell he was already unhappy about bringing the passed-out boy, so she didn't want to argue too much.
Crammed between Diana and Abraham, Aurora opened her book and was about to start reading, before Abraham interrupted her.
"Hunger Games again?"
Aurora nodded and held up the book, smiling.
He smiled, "You've read that more times than I can count."
She rolled her eyes, flicking through the pages of the worn book, "When you find me another book as good as this, maybe I'll read something else."
Abraham picked up the book out of Aurora's hand and looked at it, pulling his eyes away from the empty road, "Challenge accepted."
Aurora smiled and took her book back, opening on the third chapter.
She was about 2 more chapters in when she heard laughter coming from behind them. She could tell it was still Tara and Rosita speaking. Since it was just Tara and Rosita, Aurora could assume that Rue was still just sitting there probably just watching Tara.
She turned her head slowly, in an attempt to be inconspicuous, and saw that she was right. If looks could kill, Tara would've died a hundred times over. Aurora couldn't understand why Rue was so untrusting, Tara seems harmless. She turned her head back, and maybe it was written on her face or something but Abraham seemed to read her mind.
He leant towards her and lowered his voice, knowing that he was loud enough to be heard throughout the truck, "Your sister's right to be so cautious around new people."
Aurora shifted in her seat, "Yeah but I don't understand why, Tara seems harmless." she muttered, folding the corner of the page she was on and shutting the book.
Abraham shook his head, "You can't give two short and curlies what it seems like, you can't believe everyone's good-natured. Especially not now, not anymore. People always have an agenda, you just need to figure it out before they show you."
Her face contorted to one of disgust, "That's such a miserable take on people" Aurora muttered under her breath, intending for him not to hear her.
"Maybe," Abraham paused, "but it's kept us alive."He finished, ending the conversation.
Aurora didn't feel like reading anymore, so she put the book down on the dashboard and stared out the front window, listening to the faded conversation coming from the two women.
After hours of sitting in silence, Aurora finally hears a male voice join the conversation from behind them. She turns around and sees the guy sitting up, questioning Tara and the others.
