Chris's POV

As I was watching TV so I could distract myself from eating those delicious pancakes, I heard screams from Scarlette's room.

I rush up stairs only to find her in her bed screaming and kicking the air, I walk up to her not knowing what to do. So I grab her by her shoulders and shake her, she opens her eyes in shock and looks at me for a second and aggressively pulls away from me and buries her face in her pillow and starts crying.

"It's okay it was just a nightmare." I tell her while trying to get closer to her but she backs away. "No don't come near me, I want Steve please." she says as she covers her face with the pillow again.

After a long and never ending argument with her, I get out of her room.

I start calling Steve but he isn't picking up. I don't know what to do, so I decide to go to the kitchen and get her some pancakes and go back to her room. But lets just hope she won't hit me this time.

When I arrive she's still in the same position.

"Why did you come back! I tol-"

"I got you pancakes." I interrupt her.

A while later she raises her head, but she doesn't look at me, her eyes fall on the plate in my hands and she snatches it and starts eating while whimpering.

I've never seen her like this. It feels weird, I don't know if I'm enjoying this or not.

"Where's Steve?" She asks with a soft voice. This shocks me.

She never speaks to me with a soft voice, and I'm not gonna lie it's kind annoying, because she's definitely forcing herself to play nice.

"Well, Umm, he didn't pick up his phone, but I'm sure when he sees all those missed calls and voice mails I left him he'll come running." I'm trying my best to reassure her.

"You're welcome, by the way." I say rolling my eyes.

She looks at me with a questioning look.

"I literally helped you, you could've said 'Oh, thank you Chris' or whatever." I look annoyed because I am.

She's trying her best not to laugh but she's failing.

"I'm sorry, what? You didn't help at all, in fact you made it worse by making angry and talk a lot. So no, I'm not going to be thanking you." She replies and rolls her eyes.

"You ungrateful little gir-"

"Finish that sentence. I dare you." She gives me the most horrifying death glare, and I immediately shut up, and wait for her to finish eating.

After she was done eating her pancakes she went back to sleep. And I went back to the TV.

***

An hour later I hear the door open, and Steve walks in with his girlfriend Lily.

He starts questioning me about what happened, and when I told him he started going up stairs but I stop him by grabbing his arm.

"She's fine now, she's asleep." I reassure him but he looks at me with a confused expression on his face.

"How did she sleep after what happened to her?" he asks still confused.

"Oh, I just gave her pancakes." I say proudly.

"You sure she's asleep?" He questions with a worried expression this time.

"Yes, you can go see for yourself." I answer and release his arm.

When he came back he was relieved and calmer.

"I know you and Scarlette don't really like each other so thank you for helping her tonight." He gives me a hug caught me off guard, but still I hug him back.

"Anything for you, Steve." I say as we release each other.

For a while there was pure silence, and Steve finally broke it.

"I think it's time for you guys to know why our father is in jail and why our mother's dead." He sits on the couch in front of me and Lily, and takes a deep breath.

Come to think of it he never told us why. He never told me anything actually!

"Our father was an alcoholic and an addict. When Scarlette was six she was abused by our father, so was our mother." There was a hint of sadness in his eyes so Lily goes and sits next to him and rests her hand on his, and he connects them together.

They've been dating since middle school, and they became my favorite couple ever since.

"He never hurt me, just mom and Scarlette." He continues. "Until one day he almost killed Scarl on purpose but I stopped him. So shortly after, I collected the courage to call the police on him, I went to our neighbors next door and asked to use their phone." He takes a deep breath, and his voice starts shaking.

"Few minutes later the sirens became too close. So I got out and saw them as they breached our house next door to find mom on the floor dead and Scarlette right next to her unconscious. They arrested him for murder but it was too late. He killed mom." He puts his face in his hands "And then Scarlette told me that she watched him stabbing mom to death." A tear rolls down his cheek and he wipes it away immediately.

"We started living with our grandmother and when she died years later, the two of us were adults so I decided to never leave Scarlette's side, so I bought us this house, and I'm glad I made that decision because she still gets these nightmares."

Okay, now I feel bad about saying 'it's just a nightmare' when it's clearly not.

I've never liked Scarlette but hearing what she's been through makes me want to go and hug her and tell her that it's all over and that she's safe.

No one deserves to go through what she went through, and now I feel even more bad about being mean to her, but like it's her fault she's the one who guets on my nerves.

"I'm so sorry Steve, we're here for you two." I reassure him and he gives me a pained smile.

After a short while, everyone went to sleep. Steve is sleeping in Scarlette's room on a chair right next to her bed, Lily in the guest's room and I'm sleeping in Steve's room.

Well that was a long night.
