CHAPTER 14
"NOT FRIENDS"

[real life]

matt was supposed to drive melina home right after the library, but chris had other plans. he kept begging matt to take him to the nearest chick-fil-a. now, as they waited in the long drive-thru line, it was finally their turn to place an order.

"would you like any sauce with your order?" the worker asked, handing matt the food. matt was too busy scrolling on his phone to notice who it was. melina shook his shoulder. "he asked you a question," she said, her fingers still typing away.

"oh, sorry! yeah, the usual sauces," matt replied, looking up just as he recognized ivan—whatever-his-last-name-was. he hadn't bothered to memorize it. a quiet laugh escaped him as he glanced back at melina. now, he felt like messing with her.

"oh, ivan! long time no see. melina, look! it's ivan, your ex and the guy my girlfriend cheated on me with," he said, a sarcastic smile stretching across his face. melina's head snapped up at the mention of her ex, her eyes widening as she tossed her phone aside.

"w-what?" she stuttered, her nervousness palpable as matt grabbed the food and handed it to chris, who jumped in surprise when he saw ivan sporting a goofy chick-fil-a hat. melina finally snapped out of her daze, realizing it was indeed ivan, her old crush from seven years ago.

chris leaned over matt. "holy shit, ivan, you work here? thought my brother's ex-girlfriend got you a job at the factory," he said, snagging a fry. ivan nodded awkwardly. "yeah, I've been working here for a couple of months now." he smiled at melina, ignoring matt and chris's jabs about josie.

"hey, melina," ivan said, but melina was still too shocked to respond. matt turned to her, leaning over aggressively and shaking her leg. "are you deaf? he's saying hi," he said, forcing a laugh.

matt was obviously acting this way towards melina to not fully face what he's starting to feel. he hid his jealously with taunting her, since it's what he's used to. not realizing how fake his tone was and how clear his jealousy was showing. chris though, he noticed.

melina furrowed her brows at matt's desperation to get her to interact with ivan. ignoring him, she looked out the window, faking enthusiasm. "wow, ivan, hi! the last time i saw you was when you were exchanging saliva with josie pomeno at homecoming. how are you two, by the way?" this made ivan scratch his head nervously.
