"This is getting out of hand." I sighed and put my head in my hands. "We need to actually try and find Maeve rather than just doing the texts." Everyone had already agreed this, but without Maeve to hack, they had no idea how to go about it. "I've been racking my brains and,
"I started " I can only think of one way forward. I think we need to phone them."
A shocked silence greeted my words before Addy started nodding slowly.
" Bronwyn's right. We need to make a move and stop being idle. Around the table were nods and murmurs of assent.
I took a deep breath and scrolled through my contacts until I reached the number. Everyone stared at my phone, waiting. I shook out my nerves, and hit dial.
"Hello."
The distorted voice sounded eerily calm and as though this was expected. I fought to keep my composure as I said,
"We're tired of you bossing us around. Tell us why you're doing this, or else we're just going to stop doing what you say."
"Well," the voice replied silkily, "then you know what's going to happen to Maeve, don't you?"
Dread flooded me. I looked at the others, and saw my horror mirrored in their faces. I summoned my courage and said, "You've been hurting her anyway, and we're not standing for it anymore." My voice wavered on the last note but I hoped he wouldn't see through my bluff.
"Okay. I'll tell you. Mabye we can have some fun. Maeve has a job I need her to do for me anyway." The voice had changed from its unreadable monotone. There was an edge of excitement to it now that made me nervous.
"Let's just say," the voice all but whispered," that Simon had some insurance in case things went wrong."
There was a click, and the line went dead.
There was a small stretch of silence.
"Okay, what the actual fuck." Nate said quietly.
"So they're carrying out something for Simon. Something they would have to do if his plan went wrong."
" which it did." I whisper.
"What I don't get," Knox speaks up, " Is why they took Maeve. It's clear now that it's not just to torture us. He said he has a job for her. What did Maeve ever do to Simon?"
Around the table were blank faces.
And then, Luis.
His eyes were closed and he was as pale as a ghost.
"Shit."
