We meet the next day at the Sheriff's office and discuss options. Again, no bickering. Aria and Broderick decide to stay in Hertzwald and White Raven and I will return to the Citadel for a time. I want to check if the contracts have an 'out' clause and if White Raven needs to report to the main mission station.
Broderick hands me the ring and asks if I can find out its purpose. I nod and wrap it in a cloth. Aria, who has never had a home and never signed up with the 400 gold pieces on one of the initial Zhentarim Merchant Company's contracts, needs some paperwork. She isn't keen on having her background picked over by a fine-tooth comb. So, between her, Broderick and Amy, they do a hack job on Troy's paperwork. Sheriff Aria 'Troy' is now official.
I get a pang of worry when we leave. Will they be fine on their own? Will we be fine on our own? But it passes and our journey to the Citadel is uneventful.
White Raven and I spent a good two or three weeks explaining over and over all the things that happened. Sarog is an expert on things from the Abyss and translated the contracts. I caught a look of wonder in her eyes, once, when she was watching White Raven and myself. I read it as "How did you two nobodies get out of that situation intact?"
Well, almost intact, I will bear the scar on my thigh till the day I breathe no more. But she found no loopholes or escape clauses and we left the wretched things with the Citadel under lock and key. The ring is a Ring of Protection and I re-wrap it and add it to the items to take back with us to Hertzwald.
The devastation of the events that took place dulls in our minds but returns to life in our nightmares.
We realise that there is no point remaining at the Citadel and take our leave with the gold pieces for 'Troy' and Broderick.
A few months of settled life, chores and the mundane day-to-day will keep us occupied and out of trouble for the time being...
