Sorry for the late update. Computer broke again.
I shut the truck off in Caleb's driveway. I hear a horse neighing in pain. I go and knock loudly on the door.
I have fifty thousand dollars in my hand in my wallet and I'm willing to hand all of it over to get midnight back.
The hear footsteps, and then Caleb's Mother opens the door.
She looks me up and down.
"Can I help you sweetheart?"
"I'm Midnight's owner and I'm here to buy her back."
She sighs softly, smiling gently.
"She's not for sale."
she goes to shut the door but I catch it with my hand.
"Please." I whisper. "You don't understand."
"She's my son's horse." she says. "And she's not for sale."
"Can I at least go talk to your son?" I ask.
She sighs slowly and nods, stepping aside.
She leads me through the back and into their farm.
Midnight is neighing angrily at Caleb. He groans loudly.
"Dammit, horse! Cooperate!" he screams at her.
Midnight looks at me and gallops across the field to me.
I pet her neck, quiet.
Caleb whistles, but Midnight neighs angrily and bumps me with her nose.
Caleb walks over to me with his Dad, who is helping him train her.
Midnight is trained.
She just doesn't want to cooperate with him.
Because he is not me.
"Megan." Caleb says. "I thought you moved back to New York."
"I did." I say.
"So what brings you here?"
"To get my horse back." I say.
"She's not for sale." his father snaps.
"Please." I beg. "I'll buy you a new horse. Just give me mine back."
The man sits there, gnawing at his lip for a few minutes.
"I'll tell you what." the man says. "If you can train her to let you ride her in the next hour, you can take her for free." the man sits down on a barrel.
"Alright." I say.
"Starting now."
"I just have t get her let me ride?"
"You have to jump the course and run the track in one minute."
I nod. I hop on Midnight and pat her shoulder. She takes off, galloping along the track. We jump and go over water and everything, and then do the whole track in fifty seven seconds.
I go back over there.
The man is shocked.
Everyone is.
"Jeez." the man mutters.
"So can I go?"
"Yeah. Yeah, whatever."
I ride Midnight over their fence and put her in the back of my truck.
Carefully, I drive to the trailer store and spend seven thousand on a horse trailer. I put some hay in it and attach it to my truck. I load up Midnight, and then I put some coins in a payphone.
